The countdown to the 2024 Tony Awards officially started on Tuesday, April 30, as nominations were announced for the 77th annual honors, which recognizes excellence in live Broadway theater.

Previous Tony winners Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Renée Elise Goldsberry read a list of select nominees on CBS Mornings. Further categories will be released on the Tony Awards' official YouTube page later on Tuesday.

A number of stars nabbed nominations, including Sarah Paulson, Jeremy Strong, Eddie Redmayne, Gayle Rankin, Jessica Lange, Amy Ryan, Liev Schreiber, Jonathan Groff, Daniel Radcliffe, Bebe Neuwirth and Rachel McAdams — the latter which made her Broadway debut this season.

The industry's two top awards, best musical and best play, each contained a crop of diverse offerings.

Up for best musical will be the Alicia Keys jukebox hit Hell's KitchenIllinoise, a dance-heavy show inspired by Sufjan Stevens' acclaimed 2005 concept album; The Outsiders, which is based on S. E. Hinton's seminal novel; Suffs, the Hillary Clinton and Malala Yousafzai-produced musical about the American women's suffrage movement; and the stage adaptation of Sara Gruen's beloved book, Water for Elephants.

And for best play, the nominees are Jaja's African Hair Braiding by Jocelyn Bioh; Mary Jane by Amy Herzog; Mother Play by Paula Vogel;  Prayer for the French Republic by Joshua Harmon; and Stereophonic by David Adjmi.

The 2024 Tony Awards will take place on Sunday, June 16 at Lincoln Center's David H. Koch Theater in New York City. For a third time in a row, Oscar winner Ariana DeBose will host. The Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing present the honors, as usual.

Viewers can watch the show on CBS and Paramount+ beginning at 8 p.m. ET. Select awards will also be handed out on a preshow that will stream on Pluto TV.

A total of 36 Tony-eligible titles opened this season, 15 of which were musicals — a historic number as typically, there are only half that.

The new musicals that didn't make the cut included the blockbuster joy ride Back to the Futurethe elegant Days of Wine and Roses, starring Kelli O'Hara and Brian d'Arcy JamesHarmonyBarry Manilow's original musical 30-years in the making; Here Lies Love, David Byrne and Fatboy Slim's exploration of Imelda and Ferdinand Marcos' rise and fall in the Philippines; and the adaptation of the 2015 documentary How to Dance in Ohio, about a group of teenagers with autism preparing for a spring formal.

There was also Lempicka, a musical about Polish painter Tamara de Lempicka; the Britney Spears fairytale Once Upon a One More TimeThe Heart of Rock and Roll, with a score of Huey Lewis and the News hits; and musical versions of two other beloved novels: The Great GatsbyThe Notebook

Other productions eligible for the best new play prize were Grey House by Levi Holloway; I Need That by Theresa Rebeck; Just For Us by Alex Edelman; Patriots by Peter Morgan; The Cottage by Sandy Rustin; and The Shark is Broken by Ian Shaw and Joseph Nixon.

As far as revivals are concerned, the 2023-2024 season included fresh productions of a crop of treasured musicals and plays.

For musicals, CabaretGutenberg! The Musical!Merrily We Roll AlongSpamalotThe Who's Tommy, and The Wiz were all eligible for a nomination. And for plays, the nominees was chosen from Henrik Ibsen's An Enemy of the People, Branden Jacobs Jenkins' Appropriate, John Patrick Shanley's Doubt: A Parable, Ossie Davis' Purlie Victorious and Anton Chekhov's Uncle Vanya.
