Editorial Reviews
When dissected carefully, The Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking becomes a fascinating conceptual voyage into the workings of the human psyche. As an abstract peering into the intricate functions of the subconscious, Waters' first solo album involves numerous dream sequences that both figuratively and symbolically unravel his struggle with marriage, fidelity, commitment, and age at the height of a midlife crisis. While the songs (titled by the times in which Waters experiences each dream) seem to lack in musical fluidity at certain points, they make up for it with ingenious symbolism and his brilliant use of stream of consciousness within a subconscious realm. Outside from the deep but sometimes patchy narrative framework, the music slightly lacks in rhythm or hooks, except for the title track that includes some attractive guitar playing via Eric Clapton. David Sanborn's saxophone is another attribute, adding some life to "Go Fishing" and "The Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking." But it's truly the imagery and the visual design of the album that is front and center, since the importance lies in what Waters is trying to get across to the audience, decorated somewhat casually by his singing and the music. With Pink Floyd, the marriage of Waters' concepts and ideas with the talented musicianship of the rest of the band presented a complete masterpiece in both thought and music, while his solo efforts lean more toward the conceptual aspects of his work. With this in mind, The Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking continues to showcase Waters' unprecedented knack of addressing his darkest thoughts and conceptions in a most extraordinary fashion.

This isn't "pop" music, it isn't "easy listening", it is a tapestry, a work of art, something to immerse yourself in, and if you are lucky, or unlucky, depending on your point of view, you will see and maybe understand where Mr Waters is trying to take you, and maybe you can empathise with the characters.
I started to seriously "listen" to Floyd and Waters (Post Floyd) about twenty years ago. I find for me that it is (all) best enjoyed alone, when I am feeling mellow, maybe with a glass of scotch or a "special" cigarette....... The depth of emotion that this music can bring forth is astounding. In a darkened room, a quality sound system, no distractions... well it has taken me places far more than any movie ever could. Yes, I wish my old music teacher would ask me again how it makes me feel.
I'm not saying you need to have a few years of good life experience to enjoy the music, there are after all some stunning sounds here, but to fully appreciate it in its entirety, I would say that it helps.
I can't say that few people understand his work because MILLIONS appreciate his music and lyrics, and I do mean APPRECIATE, not just "like" his music.
Amused to Death is a 1 in a lifetime album and no wonder Waters didn't create another album yet (aside from Ca Ira) because to do something similar is quite impossible, although I hope that he takes the risk.
Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking is a journey that you don't want to miss as well. Just listen to the words of Roger and the guitar of Eric Clapton and feel the music overwhelming you. A song like Go Fishing is a lyrical masterpiece. If you notice how he describes the seasons going by "We sat out in the spring...", "And the sun went down sooner each day...", "All the leaves have fell down...", "When the first snow flake fell...". Just WOW!
If I get to choose one rock star to meet in my life, it would be Roger Waters.
Apart from that, the CD is quite basic, doesn't have any extras, but then, the price was excellent.

Dopo l'uscita di Sid e la scomparsa di Ric , solo lui . .. Dave è un grande, ottimo chitarrista che ha fornito uno stupendo contorno al piatto principale che è sempre stato Roger.
