Reviews
- RGM did a great job with this reissue. Nice all around, no complaints.
The second disc is where this really comes alive for Buchanan fans. You get Roy loosening up on informal studio jams. An excellent take on 'Sweet Dreams' where Roy plays an arpeggiated harmonic cascade straight out of Lenny Breau that I don't think I've heard him do anywhere else. A great medley of 'After Hours/Messiah' and much more.
The first disc ranges from great to 'rather interesting', but RB's guitar is a bit too subordinate to Charlie Daniels' singing and arranging. Buch's darting around the vocals, fitting his lines where he can when he can. Had this been released as Buch's first album, it may have caused confusion with the public - who's the main guy here? is that Roy Buchanan singing too? It's like he's a sideman on his own solo album. 'Black Autumn', 'The Story Of Isaac' , 'Baltimore', 'Funky Junky', 'Pain' and the surprise jazz coda of 'Billy Joe Young' are stand-outs for Roy's guitar, and good songs unto themselves. That's a high percentage of the first LP, I guess.
Recommended for the serious Roy heads out there. If you're new to RB, start with the first 3 albums before getting this. - Roy Buchanan's cover of The Story of Isaac, originally written by Leonard Cohen, is worth buying this title alone. Roy Buchanan breathes fire into Cohen's biblical song/poem and turns it into an extremely powerful rock ballad. After Hours/The Messiah Will Come Again and Sweet Dreams are also incredible songs. The audio quality is exceptional and the vinyl is dead quiet.
- Really pleased with this pressing. Jacket and vinyl design is top notch. Fantastic addition to my Buchanan discography. Audio quality is great; very dynamic, and the vinyl is exceptionally quiet.
- I just finished playing this album and it sounds really good. Quiet vinyl too. Glad to have this as part of my Roy collection. Never enough of Roy guitar playing!
- SOUND IS INCREDIBLY AMAZING!!!!!! IF YOU LIKE ROY B THIS ALBUM IS A MUST HAVE IN YOUR COLLECTION. SOUND IS DARK QUIET AND BEAUTIFUL MASTER DESIGN ON VINYL ORANGE BLACK FLAMES.
