This album is INCREDIBLE! Why it was never pushed, I haven't a clue. I wore the LP out, so I had to go CD - and it was no easy task. Haunting melodies, consuming riffs. Wow. It just blows me away. Hell, this is 10 stars!
(...) ..., the one that NO ONE reviewing a Phil Manzanera album EVER REMEMBERS to ADD is that, decades ago, Mr. Manzanera expressed a certain opinion regarding guitar parts, his dominant thought at that time was that he DID NOT WANT his Guitar parts to sound as if they were played on a Guitar, i.e., something else... (i.e. not played by a guitar)
Please listen to "Europe 80-1", it does not, nor does he hit his avoidance, instead, of yet another guitar infection, there's a synth spewing sawtooth envelopes did this to my, their, and you, you Phil Manzanera fan, you. Love is the Drug was NOT enough, eh? You just had to have more, eh? Europe 80-1 is the most guitar-avoidance ambient track (circa 1/01/1983) I have ever heard (back in 1983, too, but I got your single played in at least one club, too....
FWIW, the rest of the record leads you inexorably to the very sane "Europe 80-1" finish, & Oh My God (background), it's like one put one's stylus in a groove and followed things to the end. Or something?
I used to have this on LP and had mixed feelings about it. Maybe it's the remaster or just time, but now the totality of the disc leaves me newly impressed.
