      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

As ambitious as it is daringly transgressive, Prevenge should thrill fans of pitch-black horror-comedy -- and open untold opportunities for writer/director/star Alice Lowe.

Johnny D I thought this movie would be goofy and fun, but instead it was pessimistic and awkward. The movie has such a great premise, but unfortunately it just drags on and doesn't capitalize. It does have a few funny moments, but for the most part the pregnant mom-to-be character's cynicism rubs off on the viewer. She makes it abundantly clear that she's very unhappy, and in doing so manages to make me just as unhappy watching her. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 10/13/23 Full Review Mike J Sonic I love love it Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/29/22 Full Review andrei d Not quite Sightseers Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review james g Dark fun? The Horror - 3: A talking fetus/baby (this isn't the place to go THERE) tells Mom to do awful things. The Hook/Pace - 2: Turns episodic. The Jumps - 2: Good, then things turn comedic. The Film - 4 stars: Solid, Alice Lowe carries entire film, she does it all and is amazing. The End - 4 stars: Just when you think ... Summary: 3 stars, see this one just for Lowe's PERFORMANCE. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review tom m I'm not quite sure what prompted me to watch this. Oh well, live and learn. Quite peculiar story. Amy Nicholson FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) It's rare to see a horror film with such a feminine point of view. Aug 18, 2020 Full Review Adam Nayman Cinema Scope If the script's conflation of delicate conditions is never quite as outrageous or unsettling as its creator intends, Prevenge is still filled with moments that show Lowe's skill as a director and as an actress. Sep 28, 2017 Full Review Adam Nayman The Ringer Lowe is a more striking and resourceful actor than director, and that's fine. She's clearly a huge talent, and it's encouraging to see her finding her voice so soon, even if it's creepy baby-doll drone. Apr 7, 2017 Full Review Patrick Cavanaugh The Wolfman Cometh As sick and twisted as it is funny, while also being full of heart, showing the lengths a parent will go to to make their child happy. Rated: 4/5 May 12, 2023 Full Review Emma Wolfe SpookyAstronauts A comedy horror that actually has... a soul to it and layers with strong female lead. Rated: 8/10 Apr 23, 2021 Full Review Erin Blackwell Bay Area Reporter [Alice Lowe's] first feature as a director is brilliant in a Jennifer Saunders way, mordant, skillful, outrageous, and true.
