Power Rangers is a simple show compared to most others, but, over the past 31 years, it has constructed a complex web of lore across multiple forms of media. One of the most common points of confusion about the franchise is its multiverse. With how much Power Rangers content exists, many fans often find themselves confused by what is canon to the main universe and what isn't.

The Power Rangers multiverse is spread across 30 seasons of the main TV series, several movies, an online tabletop campaign series, and the ongoing comic book series by Boom Studios! From these sources, there are seven major timelines that all exist in the same multiverse, with all other material considered strictly non-canon.

The Main Power Rangers Timeline Covers the Past and Future

  • The central Power Rangers universe primarily consists of the majority of the Power Rangers TV series, starting with Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and ending with Power Rangers Cosmic Fury. The only seasons not set in this timeline are Power Rangers RPM, Power Rangers Dino Charge, and Power Rangers Dino Super Charge.

The seasons are either partially or fully set in the future, Power Rangers SPD and Power Rangers Time Force depict the future of this timeline. SPD is set in 2025, depicting an Earth where aliens have been fully integrated into the population, and the events of Power Rangers Dino Fury and Power Rangers Cosmic Fury, the latter set in 2023, set up this new status quo. The utopian society of the year 3000 in Time Force, meanwhile, is the furthest point in the timeline that the TV series depicts.

The main timeline also includes Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie, which acts as a set-up for Power Rangers Turbo; this is the only film that's canon to the main universe. Other material that exists in this timeline is the Power Rangers: Soul of the Dragon graphic novel, which is set in-between Power Rangers SPD and the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always special which is set after Cosmic Fury but before SPD. The connections alone prove how sprawling the live-action universe is and even still, this doesn't factor in the other intergalactic teams like the aquitar rangers.

The Power Rangers RPM Timeline is a Dystopian Future

Venjix Virus from Power Rangers RPM , also known as Evox from Power Rangers Beast Morphers
  • Power Rangers RPM is considered one of the more mature of the franchise.

Power Rangers RPM exists in its own timeline, although elements of the universe have repeatedly affected others. The RPM timeline was once similar to the main timeline, as can be seen through the presence of the Jungle Karma Pizza franchise in this universe, with the restaurant chain having first been introduced in Power Rangers Jungle Fury and owned by the Jungle Fury World Ranger, RJ. The divergence point came when Doctor K created and failed to stop the spread of the Venjix virus, which initiated a robot apocalypse, wiped out most of civilization, and forced the surviving remnants of humanity to gather in the domed city of Corinth for protection.

The clarification that RPM exists in its own timeline occurs in Power Rangers Samurai, where Ranger Operator Series Red, Scott, travels to the main universe via an interdimensional subway train. While Power Rangers RPM ends with Venjix defeated and the world on the path to recovery, its final moments reveal that Venjix lives on inside Scott's Morpher. This cliffhanger was ultimately resolved in Power Rangers Beast Morphers, the series that deals the most with the Power Rangers multiverse, when the main villain of the series, Evox, is revealed to actually be Venjix, who underwent a transformation after Grid Battleforce Gold Ranger, Nate Silva, brought Scott's Morpher to the main universe.

The Biggest Mysteries in The Power Rangers Franchise (and Whether They've Been Solved)
The Power Rangers franchise has played host to plenty of mysteries over the years, and not all of them have been solved.

Whereas fans always assumed Power Rangers RPM was set in an alternate timeline, even before this was confirmed, because of its post-apocalyptic setting, Power Rangers Dino Charge and Power Rangers Dino Super Charge taking place in their own universe was a shock to most fans.

Everything about the timeline seems normal throughout the two seasons, but things take a swerve in the Dino Super Charge finale, "End of Extinction," which lives up to its title and ends with the Rangers going back in time and inadvertently preventing the extinction of the dinosaurs. Upon returning to the modern day, the Rangers learn that their world is now one inhabited by dinosaurs, with them all working at a dinosaur zoo. The season's epilogue episode, "Here Comes Heximas," confirms that this is not a gag and is not something the Rangers plan on undoing; it's just the new status quo for this Earth.

The Power Rangers Movie Timelines Splinter and Redefine the Franchise

  • Power Rangers (2017) was one of the few times a power ranger died.

Unlike Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie, the two other theatrical Power Rangers movies are not set in the main universe. Instead, they are each set in their own timeline. While Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie features the cast, characters, and setting of Season 2 of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, it’s not possible for it to fit into the main timeline, as it sees the Rangers getting their ninja powers in a completely different manner than they do in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Season 3. The film's main villain, Ivan Ooze, is also never referenced in the main timeline.

Power Rangers, also known as Power Rangers (2017) or Saban's Power Rangers, reimagines the original five Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Jason, Zack, Billy, Trini, and Kimberly, as modern-day teenagers. These versions of the characters deal with more serious problems than their 90s counterparts, including taking care of a sick loved one, being in the closet, and facing repercussions over sending revenge porn, and are tasked with facing a far more threatening Rita Repulsa. While at this time it seems like this universe will never be visited again, as Hasbro is planning a full reboot, it has been confirmed to be a part of the Power Rangers multiverse, despite how different it is in tone from other material.

10 Power Rangers Teams That Deserve a Reunion Special
"Once & Always" was a fantastic reunion for the Mighty Morphin cast, but other Power Rangers teams deserve their own specials.

Power Rangers Hyperforce is an online tabletop campaign, similar to Critical Role, featuring an entirely new cast of Rangers and its own original story. Set in an alternate version of the year 3016, sixteen years after this universe's version of the events of Power Rangers Time Force, the series sees a group of Time Force cadets, a veteran Time Force Ranger, and a Time Force "beat cop" becoming the Hyperforce Rangers, and traveling through time to stop the Alliance from taking over the universe, and meeting countless famous Rangers, allies, and villains along the way.

Despite Power Rangers Hyperforce being all about going back in time to prevent important moments that occurred in the main universe from being tampered with and correctly acknowledging that RPM, Dino Charge and Dino Supercharge, and the comics are all set in their own timelines, it is not set in the main timeline. It's possible that it was originally meant to be, but with the series' dark ending, which sees the Rangers defeated and the Alliance taking over the universe, it was decided that it had to be set in its own universe. The presence of the Hyperforce Rangers in the comics, as well as a one-shot comic that continues the story of the series, confirm Hyperforce's place in the multiverse.

The Power Rangers Comic Timelines

  • The Power Rangers comics feature the Green and White Mighty Morphin rangers at the same time.

The Power Rangers comics from Boom! Studios deal heavily with the multiverse, although none of the timelines featured are the ones seen in the TV series. Instead, the various seasons of the show are represented by alternative versions, each from their own timeline. The story of the comics primarily revolves around alternate versions of the cast of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers who, like the versions seen in "Power Rangers 2017", are modern-day teens with complex personalities and relatable struggles. The original team of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers from 1969 only exists in this timeline, not the main one, likewise with the anti-heroic Omega Rangers and the villainous Death Ranger.

The second most prominent timeline in the comics is known as The World of the Coinless. In this universe, Tommy Oliver remained loyal to Rita Repulsa and aided her in taking over the Earth before killing her and becoming the ruler of Earth himself, Lord Drakkon. This universe gets its name from the Coinless, a group of resistance fighters led by a powerless Zack and Trini who fought against Drakkon. Since Drakkon's defeat in the epic "Shattered Grid" event, this Earth has been ruled by Kimberly, also known as the Ranger Slayer. Recently, this Earth has gained its own team of original Rangers, the Drakkon Rangers, which includes Drakkon, Kimberly, Bulk, Trini, Scorpina, and former Omega Ranger Kiya among its ranks.

The comics are also home to The Void, a universe that has been cut off from the Morphin Grid and the rest of the multiverse. This universe is home to the Solar Rangers, a team of Rangers who gain their powers through solid chunks of the Morphin Grid in their possession and who fought against The Praetor, a rogue, evil Morphin Master who wished to destroy The Void.
