Established in 1928, Potawatomi State Park is a 1,225-acre Wisconsin state park northwest of the city of Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin. It is located in Door County along Sturgeon Bay, an area of stunning natural beauty. The park is open year around. Hours are 0600hrs to 2300hrs. There will be an entry fee. You can buy a daily pass or a yearly pass for all state parks. The best deal is for seniors. A $13 yearly fee will get you into all state parks for an entire year. $28 dollars a year for the younger set, and $38 for out-of-staters. If you want to camp, "Two loops of the Daisy Field campground offer a total of 123 campsites, 40 with electricity. Four group sites can each accommodate 30 people. Two of the group sites can accommodate trailers and motor homes and the other two sites are available for tent campers. Showers and a sanitary dump station are open in season." Firewood is available in the nice park store. Also, at the store, you can rent bicycles, kayaks, and canoes. There are drinks, snacks and camping supplies. If you want to hike, there are miles of trails for you to explore. Ask a friendly ranger for a park map when you enter the park. Just pull up to the window. Make sure you bring your binoculars because the birding is fun. If you don't mind chilly water there is a nice swim area with a spectacular view of the far side of Sturgeon Bay. For a grander view of the area make sure you climb the observation tower (if it is open). Also worthy of mention is the fact that the Eastern terminus of the 1200 mile Ice Age Trail is in this park. But that is another review for another day. My favorite time to visit is in the fall. It is a bit nippy; but the mobs of people are gone. Bottom line, this is a beautiful piece of Door County you won't want to miss. If you like getting out in nature in a safe and relatively remote bit of paradise it would behoove you to take the drive north. There are also several other parks on the peninsula that are worthy of visit. They are all beautiful.

First a PSA: The old wooden fire tower is closed because it is not structurally safe. We thought people were aware of that, but if you don't follow what is going on in the park, you probably wouldn't know. We did not see anything on the park map that referred to the tower, but we ran into a couple who were surprised to find it closed. The good news is, it looks like the tower will be repaired rather than torn down. You can still get some great views of Sawyer Harbor and the ship canal from various points in the park. You will find plenty of natural beauty if you hike the trails. While the trails are well maintained, the trail markers and the map can sometimes be confusing. For instance, at an intersection, there might just be a blue marker with a hiker on it rather than a marker that indicates what trail it is. We are not the best map readers, but we encountered two other groups who commented on the difficulty of following the map, so it wasn't just us. I would not let that deter you from hiking on the trails, though. Something of note: The eastern terminus of the Ice Age Trail is in the park, so you can hike a small part of it.

For some reason, Peninsula State Park is considered more popular to go to. But Potawatomi offers stunning views that are better than Peninsula's in my opinion, especially from the observation tower. Also, Ice Age trail's eastern terminus starts here. Not to diminish Peninsula - it stands on its own - but don't just drive by Potawatomi on the way to the upper Door County - this parks has plenty to offer, especially if you're into hiking.

Basically just wanted to stop in and have a snack while looking at the water. Not many places to see water at this park. They had a couple pull outs but no water in any of the parking areas. The tower was closed. Overall I had better views at Peninsula State Park. Plus this park had a long drive just to get to anything. I wish people would stop bringing their dogs to parks. All they do is terrorize the wildlife. Leave them at home so people can enjoy nature.

I've never had a worse experience at a camp ground as I had here. Ranger Raska actually told my 65 year old mother and my wife they had to go to bed in a threatening manner, with no provocation at all, while they were walking to the bathroom! They accused us of being too loud. No way was that the truth. 5 adults around a campfire practically whispering because we had toddlers sleeping 5 feet away from us, and we had already read the reviews on the rangers aggressive policy on noise. I've camped all over the US, never have we been accused of being too loud. I will never spend another penny at a WI State Park.

This is my favorite state Park. I live nearby and come often because I love it, but when we choose to set up camp for a few nights of enjoyment with family and friends, we should not be reprimanded by park Rangers to use "whisper voices" when we are laughing and enjoying our time together.

Quiet time has always been 11 PM. When some guy in the campsite across from us tells us to be quiet at 8:55 pm or he'll call in the authorities, well, that is ridiculous! So just before 11, we get two park Rangers who tell us to whisper and that quiet time is 24/7. What the heck? We were not loud or roudy; just 5 women, all over 50, talking and laughing, having a good time. And if we whisper, we can't hear what is being said. Loss of hearing is real as we age. If our normal voices are too loud, then the parks should provide ear plugs to guests!

Other campers have barking dogs and loud children. Are they reprimanded and told to be quiet?

If people can't talk and laugh around a campfire, then why come to the state parks to camp? If people are looking for a quiet night of sleep, they should go to a hotel!

I've never had a worse experience at a camp ground as I had here. Ranger Mary was ok but this little 20 something year old Ranger Justin was on a major power trip actually told us to go to bed in a threatening manner, with no provocation at all as we were sitting around the campfire at 11:15 pm They accused us of being too loud. No way was that the truth. 5 adults around a campfire practically whispering. When we asked about the noise, he got all defencive puffed up his chest and clamed to be an off duty Brown County Deputy Sheriff, demaned id's and called for Ranger Mary for back up.... (Just like Barny Fife calling Andy Taylor for backup)..lol
He threatened to give us a fine if we didn't go to bed...Sorry, the only one to ever tell me I had to go to bed was my mother, and she has'nt done that for over 40 years.
If you want to go to a concentration camp where" lights out" is 11pm or you will be shot..Then Potawatomi State Park is your Campground.
P.S. Don't step on the foliage, you'll get a fine for that too.

Rangers were TERRIBLE!!! With in the first 20 minutes of being there my friend was given a ticket for pulling a dried dead branch (that was not attached!!!) off of a tree.
The smell of pit toilets was a constant issue!

I had an awful time here. The reviews are all correct in that the rangers are on a constant power trip and they are extremely rude. I camp quite often in Wisconsin and I have never, ever had a problem with any rangers before this. These rangers are immediately rude and short tempered with you. The pit toilets are terrible. The showers were atrocious. Someone actually went #2 in the shower and left it there.

This place was a huge waste of money and time. Please save your time and go somewhere else!!

We camped here for 2 nights last week and unfortunately I would not recommend this park to anyone. The racoons are so tame you can not scare them away from your campsite. We had a huge one come to our site 2 nights in a row and could not scare it off. When we spoke to the ranger she said that "WE" should tell our fellow campers not to feed them.. sorry but I had only been there for 1 night.. I think it is the Park Staff's job to educate and warn the campers about this. Also this seems to be a known problem there I do not understand why they did not use the live traps to catch these racoons and relocate them. We spent the last (2nd) night in the van sleeping because the racoons would not stay away from our tent. Stay Away People!!

Don't go here if you want to have any fun. Rangers are on a power trip and very rude. Gave it a chance, but should have known better after reading other reviews. Just plain terrible, far better camping in other locations.
