As in his other four tournament, the 37-year-old once again comes feels like the main point of reference for Portugal, but with arguably the best group he's ever had to support him.

The current generation of names like Bernardo Silva, Joao Cancelo and Bruno Fernandes is considered the second golden generation in the history of the country, after the first wave with Rui Costa, Luis Figo and Vitor Baia at the end of the last century.

The current stars, mentioned above, have been joined by young players such as Diogo Costa, Nuno Mendes, Vitinha and Rafael Leao. The main novelty is 19-year-old defender Antonio Silva, who has never been called up before.

Despite all this quality, Portugal had to sweat their way through qualifying, after losing to Serbia at home, via play-offs against Turkey and North Macedonia.

The Portuguese will bring to Qatar the dream of repeating or exceeding their best World Cup campaign, which took place in the 1966 edition, with a third place finish.
