PORTLAND, Ore. -- Alex Fowler crept closer to the all-time scoring record for the Portland Pilots in their 70-57 win over the Pepperdine Waves.
The Pilots (15-6, 9-1) had two players score in double figures, led by Fowler, who had 26 points. Maisie Burnham tacked on 12 points and McKelle Meek added five points, four assists and two steals.
The Portland offense was very productive from outside, pouring in 10 3-pointers on 22 attempts. Fowler was the most prolific shooter for the Pilots, draining four treys in the contest. The Portland defense held Pepperdine shooters to only 35.7 percent from the field, including 20 percent from three-point range.
How It Happened
After falling behind 16-10, Portland went on a 5-0 run with 49 seconds left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Meek, to narrow its deficit to 16-15, a score that would hold for the rest of the period.
The Pilots then rallied, outscoring the Waves 22-12 in the second quarter to take a 37-28 halftime lead. Portland was strong from deep in the period, knocking down four 3-point shots to account for 12 of its 22 points.
Following intermission, Portland continued to expand its lead, pushing it to 56-38 at the end of the quarter. The Pilots then held on for the victory in the fourth quarter.
Game Notes
The Pilots shot well from three point range, knocking down 10 of 22 long range attempts. They've made at least 10 3-pointers in five games this year.
The Pilots held the Waves to only 35.7 percent shooting from the field. It's the fifth time they've held a WCC opponent under 40% shooting from the field.
Portland never trailed in the second half on its way to victory.
The Portland bench made an impact by adding 22 points to its scoring output.
Alex Fowler led the Pilots with a game-high 26 points. She is just 10 points away from becoming Portland's all-time leading NCAA Division I scorer.
Portland got five rebounds from both Alex Fowler and McKelle Meek. Meek's five boards are a career high.
Fowler's four threes match a career high.
The Pilots' nine wins through 10 games are the most since the 1996-97 season.
