Port Antonio

Port Antonio is in Jamaica.

Tucked away on the eastern point of the island, Port Antonion is still relatively unknown by most tourists, but it has for years been the hideaway of royalty and stars alike. It is easy to see why. Its seclusion is what gives this town its charm. The beaches are beautiful, albeit a bit rocky. However the seclusion from throngs of other tourists is a huge payoff. The people are extremely friendly, and the whole city rings with a unique character all its own.

Get in[edit]

Port Antonio is northeast of Kingston and east of Ocho Rios. From Kingston to Port Antonio, you would have to fly into Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston and from there possibly take a cab from the airport, which would be very expensive, as it's a ~3 hour drive. You may opt to rent a car and do the drive. A third option is to get to the Central bus station in Kingston ("The Half Way Tree" bus terminal), and take a bus with the locals (ride is about 2.5 hours, with little leg room but lots of fun, expect 80's and 90's American and Jamaican soft rock songs to play on the loudspeakers), costing only 450 Jamaican (Feb 2016). There also is a scheduled Knutsford Express bus running from Kingston to Port Antonio.

If you’re coming from Ocho Rios you can either take a cab, drive east on Highway A4/A3 or take a flight from Ocho Rios private airport.

If you are flying into the Sangster International Airport in Montego bay getting to Port Antonio is about a 3 hour ride along the north coast. Although the journey is a bit long the scenery is wonderful.

Upon arrival you might be approached by a few locals trying to show you around (especially next to a bus terminal). Some of them will engage in a lengthy unrelated discussions before that, smoothly pivoting the conversation towards "Do you wanna go see that place?". They will usually charge around 1000-3000JMD for an hour of such tours. Conversations and tours are very informative, just be ready to pay and set the price in advance.

Get around[edit]

Port Antonio is considered to be one of most accessible towns in Jamaica. To get around one could take a local taxi. However, if you want to take in the sights a little more (and most sights are in walking distance) you could either walk or ride a bicycle.

See[edit]

Blue Lagoon

A “must see” is the Blue Lagoon. At this attraction, the blue lagoon is described to be a land-lock cove where different shades of blue, color the lagoon. At this spot tourists are welcome to swim in the lagoon if they wish. This spot is also known for its romantic feel, so it’s great for couples.

Navy Island

Another hotspot is the Navy Island. This is located off the island, but a short boat ride away. Here one can enjoy its beautiful golden-sand beaches and its own tropical rainforest.

Frenchman's Cove

Frenchman's Cove Resort is a 45-acre private estate. You can get in for 6USD. It has a beautiful running fresh water stream which connects into its own sheltered white sand beach. Unlike Blue Lagoon, it is a very calm place where no one will be trying to sell you their goods and services.

Other sights to behold are classic buildings that are still much intact, such as Portland Parish Church and Portland Parish court house.

You can also walk up the hill behind the town for a nice view over the bay.
