Pooja Hegde
She’s an epitome of beauty. Her ethereal looks are mesmerising and compel you to turn your attention to her. She’s been a successful actor both in South and Hindi cinemas. She hasn’t chosen just one industry but has learnt to live out of a suitcase, jetting in and out of Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai and locations around the world. Ask her how she manages it all, she laughs and says it’s all mind over matter. And that if your dreams don’t keep you awake, then you’re not dreaming right. She doesn’t want to be known as a PYT but takes pains to understand her role and does full justice to it. She’s got a huge fan base on social media and is wise enough to concentrate on the positives of it and doesn’t let the trolls get to her. Despite spending a decade in the film industry, she insists she’s not a veteran and has miles and miles to go before agreeing to own that sobriquet. The actress takes a look down her career and answers all our questions with aplomb in an engaging interview. Excerpts:

Pooja Hegde

Would you say it was far more difficult to make inroads in Hindi cinema, considering you have had a great run in the South Indian industry?

When I started my journey in the film industry, I didn’t categorise it as either Hindi or South Indian. I simply chose roles that I felt were the right fit for my career at the time. I’m grateful I made that choice because the South audience embraced me with immense love and made me feel like one of their own. Language was never my primary focus; it was always about the right script and role. However, I must admit that breaking into the industry without the backing of a film family or a well-connected mentor can be more challenging. In such circumstances, the success of a film can make or break your career. A hit film can open doors to more opportunities, while a setback might require you to start from scratch and work relentlessly to secure your next role. This is the path I’ve taken to build my career. In the end, one thing I’ve learnt is that you can’t keep a determined and talented individual down. I’ve persevered through the challenges and continue to move forward in this everevolving industry.

You have been in the film industry for almost a decade now. Which was that one moment where you felt like, “Oh, I have made it”?

I don’t think there was a particular moment where I felt that I had made it. I believe the love that my fans give me is the most precious moment for me. In those moments, I feel I have done something right to have won the hearts of so many people. The love of the audience is what makes us actors and those little moments are the moments we live for. It’s been a beautiful rollercoaster ride so far; it’s had its thrilling moments and its dips. But every step has been a great learning experience. I’m still evolving as an actor and I believe that the best is yet to come. I am grateful for the opportunities I’ve had and the support of the audience. All I want to do is work harder and challenge myself in every role. It’s been a journey of growth, learning and perseverance.

Pooja Hegde

Have you ever reflected on your journey?

Yes, I’ve taken moments to reflect on my journey. With my relentless work ethic, I often find myself moving from one project to the next, keeping busy. However, when I do pause and cast a glance back at my career, it’s a humbling realisation. Not bad for a shy, introverted girl with stage fright and no connections in the film industry. I didn’t have a godfather to pave the way, but it seems the universe had its own plans. There’s still a long road ahead, with a list of esteemed filmmakers I aspire to collaborate with, characters I’m eager to portray and plenty yet to prove.

Pooja Hegde

Have you ever felt demotivated in your career?

Yes, there have been moments in my career when I’ve felt demotivated. I’m only human and it’s perfectly normal to experience those emotions. When such feelings arise, I allow myself a brief period, ranging from 10 minutes to a couple of hours, to acknowledge and process them. However, I don’t permit myself the luxury of self-pity or dwelling on my circumstances I come from a family with a resilient and warrior-like spirit. My parents, in particular, have been my role models. They instilled in me the values of passion, hard work and most importantly, gratitude. A heart filled with gratitude is a constant source of motivation.

How do you tackle failures and how have you managed to stay positive despite all your ups and downs?

I remind myself why I do what I do. I feel genuine love and passion for my profession and for films in general; this keeps me motivated no matter what phase of my career I am in. I also remind myself that ups and downs are part of life; nothing lasts forever, and therefore it’s important to enjoy each aspect of life.

Pooja Hegde

People talk about pan Indian stars. And you are one of the few actresses who works in both worlds. How do you manage to balance your career in both Hindi and the South industries?

It’s a very rewarding feeling when people know you across the country and sometimes across the world. I guess I made the right choices. As far as balancing is concerned, well, sleep a little less and work a bit harder. I’m constantly learning different languages, memorising lines and emoting in different languages and adapting to the different work cultures and environments! But  most importantly, learn about the culture and the women across India and what makes them who they are, especially, in order to play them more truthfully.

You’d be seen next in a romantic thriller called Deva, along with Shahid Kapoor. What makes Deva a promising project?

Deva is a promising project because it offers a unique and engaging storyline with a strong character for me to portray. This is my first collaboration with Shahid Kapoor and it’s a film that combines action, drama and entertainment in a way that will keep the audience engaged and entertained. My fans will see me in a new light in this film. The team behind the project is also highly talented, which makes it even more exciting. I can't wait for it to be released.

What was exciting about Shahid Kapoor as a co-star?

Shahid Kapoor is an exceptionally talented actor. What excited me about working with him is his dedication and his ability to immerse himself completely in his characters. He brings a certain energy and intensity to his roles and I am really looking forward to working with him on the project.

Pooja Hegde

Do you think Bollywood stereotypes you as this pretty girl next door?

I’m just a baby in the Hindi industry; there is a lot more to come from me and I’m excited to show audiences how versatile I can be and what I can do.

Pooja Hegde

How difficult is it to be an actress in today’s time where anyone with a smartphone can troll you?

It’s definitely difficult. However, where there is negativity that exists on social media, there is also a lot of positivity out there. I receive so much love from my fans every day and for that, I’m truly grateful. I try focusing on love and positivity and sharing the same through my social media handles.

Pooja Hegde

How do you maintain your dignity in a world where rumours fly thick and fast?

Honestly, it’s an occupational hazard. It’s part and parcel of the work we are doing. Our industry is always in the public eye. It’s important to remember that it’s not necessary to react to everything you hear; as long as you know your own reality, maintaining your dignity becomes easy.

Pooja Hegde

You’ve mentioned earlier that you were a shy, introverted, and reserved child. How have you changed as a person over the years?

I’m pretty much the same person. I’m still very reserved, unless I’m in my private space with my closest friends and I know I can be completely free. Being an actor has definitely helped me and pushed me to be more outgoing. But, heart of heart, it’s not what comes naturally to me. It’s a constant battle to push myself out of my comfort zone. Hopefully, this coming year, I can be better at that.

Pooja Hegde

An actor is constantly looking for validation from the outside world.

I do have high standards for my work, and I strive to meet those standards before seeking validation from others. However, I also prioritise the happiness of my wonderful fans and eagerly anticipate their reactions to my work. The love and support they show mean the world to me.

Pooja Hegde

What kind of roles do you aspire to take up, particularly in Hindi cinema?

Roles that let me express myself as an actor and push me to be the best possible performer I can be. I’m excited to do roles that will consistently surprise and entertain audiences. Roles that excite me and let me explore sides of myself that people haven’t yet seen. Furthermore, the chance to work with great directors is something that excites me and pushes me every day. I don’t limit myself to certain genres. As much as I love films that explore interesting characters and touch the emotional core of what makes us human, I also love films that let one laugh, escape and genuinely just have a good time.

What do you do to stay grounded?

I consider myself fortunate to have a robust support system within my family. They ensure that I never let my success go to my head. Their honesty about my work and my overall career keeps me grounded and helps me maintain perspective. Additionally, my unwavering faith and belief in God serve as a constant reminder to stay humble and prioritise being a good human being, preventing me from getting too carried away with my achievements.
