The Mar-Keys were the first house band at Stax, the band that would become Booker T and the MGs, with the great Booker T. Jones, the great Al Jackson Jr., the great Steve Cropper, and the great Donald Dunn. The emphasis of this group however, was the horn section including Charles "Packy" Axton that would later become the Memphis Horns; Wayne Jackson and Andrew Love. This horn section would tour Europe with the MGs and were a part of many MG tracks. The Hit "Last Night" sold over one million copies and was the band's biggest hit by far. This band has a lot of great members, including Isaac Hayes. All of the tracks are great listening, and these are great musicians, but many of the tracks are just nice instrumentals, something new at the time. This is mostly about some very good teenagers but real professionals, that backed dozens of acts in the studio and make them stars. If you think you might like hear the roots of horns in pop and R&B, this is a great place to start, the million people who bought "last Night" were on the right track.

Not doing too well with recent purchases. A number of sacred cows have been shattered.
Unfortunately this is one of them. When you consider that most of these tracks are 1960/1 I suppose I'm being too harsh as they appear to be focused on a particular dance or format fashionable then. The first track Last Night is by far the best but it is followed by similar variants - Night Before, Morning After etc- dispersed amongst the other tracks probably because they sound so very much alike.
Really the album is full of fillers other than Last Night, Philly Dog and their B sides.
It is listenable but there is very little that sticks out on this collection.
