About Pikeville

Pikeville has a population of approximately 7,000 and is the county seat of Pike County, the largest county in Kentucky. Pikeville is an economic hub for the region with more than 150,000 people located within a 25-mile drive. Pikeville is home to rapidly expanding regional hospital, a University featuring Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine and Optometry , several local financial institutions including the second largest bank holding company domiciled in Kentucky, and an independent school district that consistently ranks among the best in the state. The city prides itself for its high quality of life with good schools, a healthy economic base, a parks system that provides a variety of active and passive recreational opportunities, diverse offerings for shopping, dining, and entertainment with safe neighborhoods, and an emphasis on quality development and protection of the natural environment.

Park System

Pikeville’s park system consists of developed and undeveloped parks on over 173 acres and includes miles of developed multi-use trails in addition to dedicated horseback riding trails. Facilities range from community, neighborhood, and resource parks to undeveloped open space, beautification areas, and gathering places. They include a waterfront park at the Pikeville Pond, several playground areas located throughout the City, Hambley Athletic Complex which hosts the home games of Pikeville High School and the University of Pikeville, and Bob Amos Park which provides track and field facilities, a full-size natural grass soccer field, and a state-of-the-art artificial turf field which also serves as a practice field for the University. Bob Amos Park is also the location of many of the trails, the community’s YMCA, and a fully equipped recreational vehicle park. Several facilities such as shelters, community centers are available for rentals through the City.

Center of Healthcare

The city is well known as a regional center for healthcare largely thanks to Pikeville Medical Center. It was established in 1924. Today, PMC has over 3,000 employees, offers more than 400 different services using the highest levels of technology available, and is a 340-bed facility, including 57 ICU beds. It wins various awards in a variety of categories each year and has recently opened a children’s hospital and an autism center.

Increasing Diversity

As Pikeville continues to evolve, it seeks to promote its sense of community through programs designed to celebrate its history, heritage, and culture while enhancing its neighborhoods, and preserving its historical and natural treasures.

Education

While the Pikeville Independent School System is not one of the largest in the state, it makes up for it in quality. Pikeville High School has ranked in the top ten in the state each of the last two years by U.S. News and World Report. Scores on standardized tests place the district in the state’s top 10 percent. The University of Pikeville has been growing rapidly in recent years and with the additions of the Osteopathic Medical School and the School of Optometry, it is providing opportunities for our young people while also bring in hugely talented and diverse groups of people from around the country.
