Editorial Reviews
Usually viewed in a country context, Emmylou Harris is in fact one of the most distinctive and visionary voices in all of popular music to emerge over the last three decades. Mentored by ex-Burrito Brother Gram Parsons, she rose to stardom as his transcendent vocal partner on the "Cosmic American Music" gracing his landmark solo albums GP ('72) and Grievous Angel ('73). Harris' own ever-adventurous solo career launched shortly after Parsons' untimely death with 1975's PIECES OF THE SKY. Produced by Brian Ahern (who would helm ten more albums for Harris and become her second husband), the LP showcased her crystalline, achingly beautiful vocals, and kicked off a string of '70s album masterpieces featuring her "Hot Band" of stellar sidemen that are her defining classics. A nine-time Grammy-winner, Harris is equal parts keeper of Parsons' extraordinary flame, sweetheart of the rodeo, alt-country/rock madonna, and 100% all-time master interpreter of American roots music.
Each historic album is digitally remastered and expanded with rare bonus material, masterfully supervised for reissue by original producer Brian Ahem. Upgraded booklets feature all-new notes and vintage, previously unseen photos.
Harris' momentous 1975 major-label solo debut PIECES OF THE SKY features previously unreleased versions of "Hank And Lefty" and "California Cottonfields." Guest players and voices include Linda Ronstadt and Ricky Skaggs.

I first heard Emmylou at the Child Harold in DC. Fast forward a few years, I was laying in my rack in Germany half asleep when my roommate came in with some new vinyl, said he had a record from someone brand new, and put it on the platter. When the needle hit the grove, I jumped up and shouted "Emmylou has a record!" He looked at me with an open mouth and big eyes, he just couldn't believe I knew who she was.
I found out later she had recorded before with GP and I have those on CD now, but I didn't know that at the time. To me this is her first and still best record. Yes. I know Gliding Bird came first and I have it on a vinyl I found in a bargain bin, but I still count this as the first commercial solo record. Of course I have the vinyl, but it's nice to have the CD too and get the two extra tracks.
You can get some of the tracks here on other Emmylou CDs, but not all of them. So, if you're an Emmylou fan, it belongs in your collection.
Here I am listening to this with my Denon DH-D1001 headphones (which I also highly recommend with 5 stars), and WOW! it is a fantastic, fabulous piece of work. All the songs are 5 star for both technical quality and performance delivery by Emmylou.
I'm not audiophile reviewer and can't talk about the smoothness of this and the dynamics of that. All that I can say is that this is one heck of an album. If you are an Emmylou Harris fan and don't have this one, then you are missing out on her best album. It is an absolute must-have choice in any Emmylou Harris collection.
(imagine, if you will, 4 california not-quite-post-hippie teenagers, rockin out to the strains of "We don't smoke marijuana in...")...the opening act was a tiny little woman with a HUGE voice...thus we were introduced to Emmylou Harris.
After that, every time she came out with an album (umm-hmm, vinyl) we got it. The harmonies alone are priceless.
On the morning of 9-11, as i sat watching to horror show that was the news, and calling friends just to touch base with fellow humans...the words to Pieces of the Sky kept filling my ears:
"what if pieces of the sky were falling
in your neighbors yard
but not on you?"
