Piazzale Michelangelo
Piazzale Michelangelo

About
This neoclassical-style piazza built by Giuseppe Poggi in the 19th century offers some of the best panoramic views of Florence's historic center. The plaza is also home to several replicas of Michelangelo's famous sculptures, including David and the Medici Chapel statues.
To get to the piazza, you'll need to climb up a steep hill, but the unobstructed views are worth it. Sunset is a popular time to visit when the plaza is bathed in golden light. You can take a taxi or car tour up the hill, or for a unique experience, pass by the piazza on a Vespa tour through Tuscany from Florence.

Top ways to experience Piazzale Michelangelo

Address
Neighbourhood: Piazzale Michelangelo
Just outside the ancient walls of Florence, Viale Michelangiolo starts. It is a winding road rimmed by wonderful poplars and holm oaks. The long ascent opens up to the most beautiful and famous panoramic viewpoint of Florence: Piazzale Michelangelo, where an elevated terrace offers visitors an incomparable and breathtaking view of the entire city from above. During good weather, Piazzale Michelangelo provides visitors with a serene space surrounded by the amazing landscape, better if accompanied by a fresh gelato from a local kiosk. During night, visitors will be dazzled by the warm lights of the capital of the Renaissance. Spend a second with the silent Romanesque beauty of the Basilica of San Miniato al Monte: the one that wishes good morning and good night to Florence!

Glad I got advanced tickets! Enjoyed the markets in San Lorenzo and the best was the Santa Croce church! Loved Florence enough to go back!Visited May 2023Travelled soloWritten 18 May 2023
- PAYEL M DEYKolkata (Calcutta), India175 contributionsmust go place in Florencemust go place in Florence - the view is beautiful. this is the best place to see the sunset from the square. its a small hike from the main city and a very enjoyable walk. Otherwise, also local taxi takes around 12 euros from Duomo to the square. the walk can be down via Arno River.Visited May 2023Written 8 June 2023
- Andrew W5 contributionsBeautiful View, Very CrowdedThis spot is very popular and invites a fantastic view of the Firenze skyline. People are generally polite and will allow others to take a picture along the edges either at the corner of the square or along the lower balcony. Arrive ~2 hours before sunset to find a good spot on the steps (often musicians will be playing). There are better places that are less crowded with unobstructed views of the city that locals prefer (such as at the church up the hill), so ask around and don't fall in love with this one location alone.Visited June 2023Written 28 June 2023
- Melissa7 contributionsSunset at Piazzale MichelangeloSunset is the perfect time to enjoy the view. We arrived 2 hours early to secure a good spot along the railing. - Touristy_DLucknow, India171 contributionsBeautiful views of FlorenceThis is a must-visit if you’re in Florence. The view of the city from the top of Piazzale Michelangelo is so beautiful! Loved it… It got a tad bit chilly up there, so if you’re coming from a warm country like me, you may want to have a light shrug or shawl handy. The place has a lot of touristy food trucks as well in case you get hungry. How to get there? We took a bus to Piazzale Michelangelo, after looking up the route on Google maps. Some people also like to do the walk up, but it could be tiring. We did walk down and that was very enjoyable!Visited June 2023Travelled with familyWritten 3 July 2023
- Kenosky HillsPort Harcourt, Nigeria843 contributionsAmazing view of Florence from the PiazzaleThe Piazzale Michael Angelo offers visitors a wonderful opportunity to see Florence in all it's glory. The Duomo, Baptistery and Bell Tower are very visible and the view of the sunset from the top of the Piazzale is mindblowing. Warning to visitors, wear comfortable footwear if the plan is to ascend via footVisited July 2023Travelled soloWritten 10 July 2023
- Elizabeth TAshford, United Kingdom5 contributionsBeautiful city, amazing views from the top!The long walk uphill to the Piazzale, is completely worth it. The view is incredible. There are refreshments and toilets at the top, and you can go further up. You can also get a taxi and I think a bus. But there is so much more to see in Florence - far too much in one day. Hope to go back for 3 or more. Beautiful city! As to be expected the centre can be very expensive. Got caught by accidently ordering large gelatos - which were delicious but cost 15 euros each!! Helps to have done some research beforehand and have a good map.Visited August 2022Written 12 July 2023
- Jonas AStockholm, Sweden938 contributionsTop view over FlorenceThis is the place for getting a spectacular view over the inner city of Florence. It can be crowded as many tourists gather in the early evening to get their selfies with the view, at sunset, over the city in the background. As the name implies this square is honoring the sculptor Michelangelo and some replica monuments are here. But such replicas, or the originals, can also be found elsewhere in Florence. There are some parking spaces, but they were closed when we were there, so plan for a walk. While you don’t need a very high level of fitness to walk up to the viewing point, you should be aware that it is still quite a walk. Especially if you are recovering from an ultra marathon or if your knees or lungs aren’t 100 percent.Visited April 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 13 July 2023

- Akshaya SNoida, India520 contributionsAmazing views of FlorenceWe liked Florence a lot due to so much art present in the city and Piazzale Michelangelo was our favorite place in the evening to view the whole city. It was a spectacular view and we went not at sunset but few hours before that. So, we avoided the crowd as well. The place was lively with some live performance going on during that time.Visited June 2023Travelled with familyWritten 14 July 2023

If you can walk early in the morning the place will be just for you. 8:00am is a good time in May. A beautiful view of Florence and Arno River will appear from different places during your way up and down. You will avoid turists and all the stands selling souvenirs. The quiet square and the open view are a worth it thing to do in a ahort stay in Florence. After that you can walk to Palazzo Pitti and go down to cross Pontevecchio almost empty. A miracle!

Beautiful place on a sunny day and the best view of the whole of Florence. The atmosphere and the position is what makes this square so nice although many others looks better.

Went early to watch the sunset from the steps and it was already quite busy. Lots of kids and young people. Lots of people smoking on the steps, which sucks for those who don't. Not sure why this is labeled as one of the best sunset spots - in January the sunset was not in the direction of the beautiful view of the dome - it was in the opposite direction. Still a nice and lively place to visit with beautiful views.

My family went there to get a few pizzas before the sunset at the famous hill in Florence. They welcomed us in and made us delicious pies. Had cold beer and let us use their clean restroom. Super nice and friendly staff. Chef is excellent.

Such a fantastic viewpoint of the city! You walk up through really nice roads and then reach the top where there is live music and a restaurant/ drink stand. Would definitely recommend visiting here!

It is a beautiful place where you can take a view of florence. We walked to the piazzale.
It wasn't an easy route because you have to climb a hill, but once you get there, the view is stunning. Do not forget to visit Basilica san miniato del Monte. It is 5 minutes walking.

The view you get from up here is amazing. Worth going all the way to the top just to stare at the Duomo and at Santa Croce. It is easy to reach, just a few minutes away from the historic center.

This scenic viewpoint is amazing. It looks like a postcard. I came with friends. It is easy to get separated as there are a ton of people. There is plenty of parking and there are a few outside vendors. Watch for the pickpockets, but none of us in our group, experienced any trouble at all.

An absolute must for a sunset/sunrise visit. It is a climb though so may be difficult for someone less mobile. Go with enough time to find a seat on the steps and bring a drink 🌞

It's very hard to catch a taxi on the street. The best way to get a taxi quickly is to call the central taxi number: +39 055 4242 and they will send a taxi to you quickly!

What buses take me to Piazza Michelangelo, where do I catch them, and is a Tabacchi the place where I would buy the bus tickets?

The bus and tram network in Florence, Italy, is run by the ATAF e Li-nea consortium. Timetables and other service information about day buses, night buses, electric buses and trams can be found on the ATAF website. Much of it is in English, but the Italian version contains the more up-to-date transport network map.
Search for Firenze bus map
I believe you can buy bus tickets at local shops, like Tabacchi

Sorry, never counted them 😁
Is the walk up possible with a stroller? My husband is worried that it will be all stairs.

Going on a day trip to Florence from Pisa. Planning on visiting the Duomo and Piazza Michelangelo. What do you recommend as the best way to travel between these 2 attractions?
Is there a bus that services these areas?

It's just a 1.3mile walk between them past some nice must-see sights. You'll actually get there before the buses. Bus 12 and 13 go to the Piazzale Michelangelo, but from the Duomo you have to take a bus to get to a stop for 12 or 13.
