The piazza has various of coffee shops, restaurants and bars to frequent. You can sit and people watch as you sip on a coffee or have a beer or something eat. As you walk up to the Piazza they are plenty of vendors and shops to find whatever souvenir you may want to take home. Go with your eyes open and marvel in the splendour and majesty of the Basilica, Doges Palace and the square itself. There is so much to see and do there. Be warned, you’ll be up on your feet a lot so be prepared to sit down, rest and eat. Venice is small enough to enable you to stroll a little and find somewhere else to eat if yon want yo avoid San Marco prices. The cafes on the square are obviously expensive and you can find better value just off the square, but you're paying for the atmosphere. It is near the end of the water taxi stop and takes about 45 minutes from the train station stop. If you really want to appreciate this Piazza set your alarm for 5:30 or 6AM
and wander down there with a coffee. There are no crowds then and you
can enjoy the magnificence of the architecture. Anytime after 0830 the crowds start appearing and it is hard to even walk through the Piazza.
The same goes for taking a very early Vaparetto boat - there is no one in
the early hours at the Rialto Bridge - hop off and get a photo of just you
on the bridge. You won't be able to even get near the edge as the day moves on.

Beautiful architecture around the square like the Basilica,Doge,s Palace,Bell Tower and others but long queues for entry into these,not pleasant in hot July sunshine. If you sit on steps you will be ushered off by ones patrolling the square.so if you want to rest the only places are the expensive restaurants.Be careful here as a fee will be added to you bill for the music provided as if 17 euros is not enough for a cup of coffee. Eat in side sreets at a more reasonable price and even better little sandwich bars selling delicious take away ones for a few euros. If ever thinking of returning it would Autumn time,less crowded no queueing unlike the hot and overcrowded high season.

First of all, we did not have enough time for everything. Walking around means lots up and down over the many, many bridges, and my wife struggled.
That said, by walking around on our own, we saw loads and went into several Churches and temporary displays which we found down side alleys. These were mostly free and beautiful, interesting, and worth the walk. Note where the sun is though, as keeping it behind, or in front of us kept us at least in the right general direction. It is so easy to get turned around, and constantly referring to the map is not for us. If anywhere, this is the place to just wander around and see what you can see.
Getting into the Doges Palace, Tower or Basillica must be planned as the opening hours are short on some days, big queues if you don't have an express ticket, and get expensive.
The Cafe Florian was a great place to have a drink and relax and watch the Piazza. Weddings and people dressed up, people watching. All great, but be prepared for the eye watering bill where they even add 6-Euros each for listening to the band play, despite the already high prices.
So, my advice, don't book a tour unless that is your thing. Leave plenty of time to do your own thing and don't be afraid to leave the main area and explore.

OK, so it is going to be busy but some things you have to do! We think that the crowds are less than in previous years, probably due to COVID restrictions. So, although it was busy, it was very manageable.
Actually, my review is for gentleman( and ladies) of a certain age who may get caught short and need the loo. We could not find it even though there are many public bathrooms throughout Venice and all serviced. It is situated just off the Piazza San Marco towards the exit at Museum Correr, to the left and set back behnd the place where all the guided tours begin. It is usually between 50 cents and 2 euros depending which one you use but here it is €1.50. Perfectly usable and clean. Generally impressed given the numbers of people passing through and experiences in other cities. Well done, Venice!

For centuries the center of Venice, 'la piazza' as the Venetians call it, is now on the to-do list of thousands of tourists who flock to the square on a daily basis. New rules ensure that most people do not stay for a long time. It is not longer allowed to sit on steps, stairs or even the pavement. Guards are ensuring the rules are enforced. The only alternative is to move on or to get a seat on one of the (expensive) restaurant terraces. Another big difference with the past is there are no pigeons anymore, a big improvement.
It takes some time to discern the different styles of the historic buildings that line the square. The basilica completed in 1092 stands out, as well as the 98m high clocktower (a 1912 reconstruction of the original one). The administrative buildings are perhaps less interesting, but together they give the square its impressive stature. Personally I liked the gothic style Porta della Carta (1443) with its beautiful decorations.
Overall a captivating experience, but take your time and do some prep work before visiting.

Okay. It is a big, sunny plaza of paving stones (and some tidal issues) surrounded by piles of stone (in the form of palaces, cathedrals, and commercial buildings. So, how exciting is this? Very exciting if you think about Christopher Columbus, Marco Polo, the modern university, and opera. This is and exemplifies a major stop along the road to a concept as large as "modern civilization."
Depending on the sun, seriously consider under one of the many umbrellas and pay more than you should for a drink while a band plays nearby.

The square is dominated at its eastern end by St Mark's basilica. The west facade of the basilica consists of great arches and marble decoration , Romanesque carvings round the central doorway. Piazzetta San Giovanni XXIII is an open space on the north side of the basilica. The neo- classic building on the east side adjoining the Basilica is the Palazzo Patriarcale ,the seat of the Patriarch of Venice. Beyond that is the Clock Tower, above a high archway where the street Merceria leads through shopping streets to the Rialto, the commercial and financial centre. To the right of the clock tower is the closed church of San Basso. To the left is the long arcade along the north side of the Piazza, the buildings on this side are known as the Procuratie Vecchie, formerly homes and offices of high state officers in the days of the republic of Venice. Nowadays the arcade is lined with shops and restaurants at the ground level with offices above. Turning left at the end , the arcade continues along the west end of the Piazza to the entrance of the Museo Correr. Turning lef again, the arcade continues down the south side of the Piazza. The buildings on this side are the new procuracies. The ground floor has shops and also the famous cafe, Caffe Florian. Opposite to this, standing free in the Piazza is the Campanile of St Mark's basilica. Adjacent to the Campanile , facing towards the church is the elegant small building, Loggetta del Sansovino, and used as a lobby by patricians waiting to go into a meeting of the Great Council in the Doge's Palace. Across the Piazza in front of the church are three large mast like flagpoles with bronze bases decorated in high relief. The Venetian flag of St Mark flies together with the Italian flag.

If you visit Venice, you will visit here: there's no two ways about it. And well you should! We passed through it at least once a day and often two or more times (our visit was only a little over two days). Our first night, a choir was singing not far from the Basilica and while the music was a little cheesy (think Up with People in the US—although we spoke to some of the singers afterward and they were all from Italy), it was still a wonderful experience. They have other public art projects there: we looked online hoping there would be others but they were not during our visit. We didn't visit any shops (they are very tourist-centric, understandably) but unlike Times Square in NYC, it didn't feel like a place to be avoided at all costs (late November almost certainly helped).

San Marco's plaza is definitively a tourist trap, but one that has to be seen. We like it best at night, when the bands at the cafes play music. Be aware of buying anything here though - it's utterly expensive. You can listen to the music without buying that 11 Euro espresso!
During the day it's quite crowded, but evening is not so bad, as many tourists are day tourists only and leave in the evening.

The Piazza is truly a magical place. Sitting there, you can feel a sense of history. We went at an off peak time so there were not too many people. Definitely worth visiting. Go there, sit an have a coffee, soak in the atmosphere!

We were treated to the most incredible cello music one afternoon, the man was so good he almost moved me to tears. There are a lot of buskers around Venice and they seem to be top notch. I've only ever known of organised music in the square very occasionally in the evening and it does get very quiet once the basilica and palace close. Venice has a tourist office but it is the kind of place you want to just wander and see what you find.

I agree I would reschedule if possible. Stunning in the dry sunshine. Would not be the same in the cold, wet and damp. Save your money and visit in better times. Pop along to Lake Garda too. Stunning towns surround - especially the north.

Come hanno già consigliato evita i mezzi pubblici,sicuramente c'è fila da fare e tempo prezioso sprecato,riguardo le cose da vedere dipende dai gusti,se ti piacciono i musei devi sceglierne al massimo 2, perché per entrare sicuramente c'è fila,ed è già tanto se riesci a vederne 2, oppure girare per i vicoli,fino ad arrivare a Piazza San Marco,basta seguire le indicazioni. Se arrivi dalla stazione o da piazzale Roma,ti do alcuni consigli: 1 utilizza i bagni pubblici (tutti rigorosamente a pagamento )che sono in zona perché una volta entrato nel labirinto dei vicoli veneziani,di bagni neanche l'ombra,e tieni presente che il tragitto stazione- piazzale Roma a piedi circa 30-40 circa minuti solo andata, 2 portati bottigliette acqua sufficienti alle tue esigenze se non vuoi spendere un patrimonio, fontane pubbliche inesistenti, 3 occhio ai borseggiatori, 4 scarpe comodissime,durante il tragitto abbiamo trovato solo, casualmente, una piccola area di sosta con 3 panchine ,e con un po' di fortuna siamo riusciti a sederci per mangiare un panino.....dopo questa esperienza ho capito perché i turisti arrivati in Piazza San Marco bivaccano sui gradini della Piazza,mangiando e bevendo,utilizzando questo bellissimo posto come una grande area ristoro con le conseguenze negative ben note a tutti.Venezia è bella,ma bisogna fornire maggiori sevizi di qualità ai turisti e a questo aggiungere più controlli.

Faremo una gita di una giornata a Venezia. Arriveremo a Piazzale Roma con l'autobus. Mi interesserebbe vedere la basilica di San Marco e la basilica di Santa Maria della Salute. Volevo sapere se c'è il biglietto salta-fila per la basilica di San Marco. Ci sono musei a pagamento? Si può usare il vaporetto per raggiungere le due basiliche? Quali linee bisogna prendere? E' meglio il biglietto giornaliero?

Non si pagano, per San Marco nel week end potresti fare un po di coda. Musei a pagamento consiglio palazzo ducale. Quanto al vaporetto calcola che ogni corsa costa 7 euro e vale 70 minuti. Quindi consiglierei l'andata in vaporetto facendo il giro per il Canal grande(esiste anche quello per giudecca molto meno scenografico) fermandosi alla fermata prima della Madonna della salute , visitare la chiesa e poi proseguire per San Marco. Ritorno a piedi che poi è la cosa che ti godi di più. Passeggiare per venezia è bellissimo, perdersi a venezia ancora meglio

I’m taking my grad daughter there fir only one day as we return from a cruise. We leave Marco Polo airport at 6:00 AM so I need to know how long it takes to get from hotel to airport and a Goodman to get there.

We travels from the airport to our hotel on the grand canal and it took 55 minutes . Our hotel was a 15mins walk from saint Marco square. We were central to saint Marco. Hope this helps.

I think maybe is better to hire a local guide or going in a gondola to many places. Some places are difficult to go in a wheelchair.

Hi heading there march 11th for 4 nights 5 days. We haven’t booked any excursions or anything or even transfers. Breakfast is included and we’re staying near st marks square. Do you think 1.500euros would be enough for excursions, meals, drinks and transfers? Thanks

Hi we stayed only 5 mins walk from St Marks square and we had a fantastic time the only thing we didn't do was a gondola ride as we had more fun trying all the back streets. We had amazing food and only spent about ÂŁ450 in total including going up the tower, the palace and church.
