Trying to say something original about Aperture is like trying to say something original about photography. It's not really possible. The magazine, after all, has shaped photography for more than half a century. Not just American photography...all photography. It's been that influential.

Obviously, you can't distill all that down into a single volume. However, the editors have done a superlative job of selecting the images and essays. This is a book that merits study, but also rewards casual viewing. Open it up anywhere--pick any page at random--and there'll be something there to please the eye or the mind.
