A nice compilation of Ringo's best tracks, that rightly concentrates on those early 70s hits and the superstar supported albums "ringo" and "goodnight vienna" then takes us up to his career relaunch in the 90s , making obsolete his previous compilation "blast from your past" into the bargain.

Never the greatest singer (to be kind) his doleful tones sound ideal for country but thats only really heard on a couple of tracks here including "beaucoup of blues" which is one of the best.

Elsewhere the glam stomp of "back off boogaloo" , the spector sweep of "photograph" and the Elton John written celebration of his working class roots "snookeroo" all shine bright before we hit the inevitable downturn in the 2nd half......But even then we still get the superb, byrdsy "weight of the world" to sweeten the pill.

Certainly a compilation would seem the best way to go with Starr and this is pretty much the only choice out there and presented in the best sound.

20 tracks here. 12 of them are from the 1970/1974 era, and among them 12, 10 were on the "Blast From Your Past" compilation released in 1975. Which compilation is in its entirety represented here.
From the 1976/1983 era : 3 songs. Just 3. And that's probably enough, though I would love to have "Drowning In The Sea Of Love" and a track or two from "Old Wave" here.
From the 1992/- era : 4 songs, which is a bit thin considering it's the longest era in Ringo's career.
Oh, and you also got a rarity recorded in 1988 : a cover of "Act Naturally" with Buck Owens.
All in all, this best-of, these 68 minutes of music, are really based on the first part of Ringo's career, so why won't they re-released "Blast From Your Past" with a few bonus-tracks instead of this one ?

I love this for the simple reason that it is such upbeat and happy music.
'Goodnight Vienna', 'Back Off Boogaloo', 'It Don't Come Easy', 'Photograph', 'Snookeroo'...what's not to love?
Ringo is the king of good times pub music.

Not bad! I am not sure if I think the material on Photograph is better than on Paul's Wingspan, but that one was a disappointment and this more like a positive surprise. The four tracks that open the album are simply great, and many other tracks are almost as fine – like "Weight of the World", which on the other hand isn't the best track on 1992's Time Takes Time ("Don't Know a Thing About Love" is better). Not all of the songs are as fine, but I guess it is a part of the deal when it is about Ringo. About the videos, I was especially fascinated by "You're Sixteen." How I wish the modern MTV would show stuff that looks like that, instead of the aaasss exhibitions that I know have sadly made many viewers find a female body generally disgusting.

By completing the work of Blast From Your Past and Starr Struck, Photograph has become the must-own Ringo Starr collection. Never known for making great albums (though Sentimental Journey, Ringo, and the coked-out disco of Ringo the 4th have their moments), Ringo could make some great singles: "Photograph," "It Don't Come Easy," "Oh My My" and "Hey Baby" are nice, overlooked 70s songs. Fortunately his run of subpar albums, from Ringo's Rotogravure to Old Wave, is largely avoided (there are a few of those tracks here, such as "Wrack My Brain" and "A Dose of Rock 'n' Roll"), and a decent selection of his post-1980s work is collected for the first time. Though they have the tinge of George Harrison's producer, Jeff Lynne, these are competent, catchy, and fun songs (though far from contemporary or groundbreaking), showing a more reflective, older and wiser Ringo ("Weight of the World," "King of Broken Hearts"). If only more aging rockers would take their cue from him. There are a few weak cuts (his duet with Buck Owens on "Act Naturally" and the terrible 80s production on the Harrison-composed "Wrack My Brain"), but this, more than anything else, entertaining. This is all Ringo has ever aspired to do, and Photograph reveals a musician who is far less talented, ambitious and pretentious than many of his peers, but knows exactly how to utilize them to make his music better and more fun.

Who would have ever thought that one day, Richard Starkey, would eventually become “the good looking Beatle?” One can not look or listen to Ringo without hearing who he actually is and what he’s about.

“Who he is” ... is Ringo Starr, the drummer for a little known band who went by the name of The Beatles, who had a short but memorable effect on the music world. And like many of his counterparts from the days of the 60’s, was much overlooked as a drummer ... though in my humble opinion, he was quite innovative, consistent, reliable, steadfast, and brilliant. Though, he was forever to live in the shadows of John, Paul and the guy who never said anything, George.

“What he’s about” ... is the continuation of splendid first rate rock and roll pop songs. Sure he can be silly, pretentious, and was never too proud to take a handout from one of his brothers, but even with those handouts, he turned them into his own personal statements, forever marked as a Ringo Starr song.

Ringo is just so pleasant, and in the moment, that it is impossible for anyone to not want to be in his presence ... and because of this gracious attitude he has worked EVERYONE, people stand in line for their chance to do their part on any Ringo release. His drumming can be heard on material by The Who, Tom Petty, Oasis and countless others.

I’ve seen Ringo Starr with several incarnations of his All Stars [of whom to be a member, one only needs to have had but one single hit], and the shows are brilliantly fun. And so is this release from Ringo. Listen, Ringo is not John Lennon, or Paul Mc Cartney, but he does put out some really special rock and roll ... and while his individual albums may seem weak and lack direction, here on a compilation, you are going to get the very best of what Ringo is all about ... his time honored tunes, singles that will last forever, from the man who has never lost the beauty and essence of Flower Power, Peace & Love, and the belief in the values of the 60’s ... or the simple act of a genuine smile.

Very nice compilation of all the successes of Ringo, but the reason why I bought this one was for the extra dvd with bonus material. A little bit disappointed, because one the nicest promo video was missing "The Cooler". A mini film with Barbara Bach, Paul & Linda McCartney. This one I could find on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-rKkEoxX0AI

Ringo Starr belongs to those drummers, who never should have raised their voice to sing, although his legendary fellow Keith Moon had even more horrible entrances.

On the other hand we would have missed some mildly funny The Beatles songs and a few unforgettable early solo hits like "It Don't Come Easy" (1971), the great glam pearl "Back Off Boogaloo" (1972) and the worldwide pop hit "Photograph". From his 'work' after 1973 one of the very few to stand the test of time is the fine ballad "King of Broken Hearts" from his 1998 album Vertical Man, like six others here featuring the beautiful guitar of George Harrison plus a string arrangement by Graham Preskett, who played the violin in "Black Lace Shoulder" on the fantastic debut album of Metro back in 1977.

I don't want to talk about some really embarrassing songs, that also got their place on this all star "Very Best of" compilation. But it's alright, Ringo: three stars will do it after all.
