Valerie Anne Autostraddle But goodness gracious was this show SLOW. While I appreciated the noir feel in theory, in practice it made me rather sleepy. Sep 30, 2020 Full Review Shubhra Gupta The Indian Express It may have been set so many years ago, but it speaks to the world today - race, discrimination, religion, moral turpitude, different sexual orientation, feminism, all wrapped up in a cracking mystery. Aug 25, 2020 Full Review Melinda Houston Sydney Morning Herald This time round the bedrock is corruption -- in the police force, politics, business -- making the stakes higher, and the gig so much tougher. It's an intriguing mix that's as intelligent as it is stylish. Rated: 4/5 Jul 6, 2020 Full Review Daniel Seddon NME (New Musical Express) LA is beautifully realised in this period detective drama, but eight episodes in and the case goes very cold indeed. Rated: 2/5 Jul 8, 2021 Full Review Jackie K. Cooper Huffington Post Almost too gritty but not quite. Once you get to the courtroom battle the series wins you over. Rated: 7/10 Dec 2, 2020 Full Review Kathryn Reklis The Christian Century There is something thrilling in wondering what new stories we need to tell about institutions of public life when we no longer trust that they are inherently just or righteous. Bruce J This may sound a bit silly, but the biggest issue I had with it is this isn't a 'modern' or 'realistic' version of Perry Mason. This has nothing to do with Perry Mason. I'm not even talking about the Raymond Burr TV series, I'm talking about the Perry Mason books. And the Raymond Burr series. And all of the other adaptations. The only resemblance to this and Perry Mason is the tone period for the books, and the names of the characters. They shouldn't be allowed to call this Perry Mason! The characters aren't the same in any way. Now if this was just a new detective mini-series that doesn't desecrate Perry Mason, and you just watch it, it is pretty good. I think of it as a gritty period piece. It's a shame they had to lie and call it Perry Mason to get more viewership. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/02/24 Full Review Gareth v The telling of this origin story is gritty (and at times goes to far), but it's shines brightest in the courtroom scenes. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/24/23 Full Review Edoardo C Matthew Rys is so talented. I have to say, notable cast. as if I would have preferred Tatiana Maslany in both seasons. they're so much brilliant, that you actually are catapulted in the 30s LA, after a couple of minutes. really well shaped. it's a shame they canceled after 2 seasons. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/24/23 Full Review Rick J Noir done true to its genre. Many attempt noir and fail, but PM walks the understated and stoic nature on noire, while keeping the audience interested. The great cast, art direction and direction, tackle the challenge and keep a down-and-out storyline fresh and compelling. This is a great series and I hope they pickup a 3rd season. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/31/23 Full Review William T As a kid I watched and loved the original Perry Mason with my parents. It's great Crime Noir, faithful to the original books by Earl Stanley Gardner. I never missed an episode then and with this fantastic cast and writing I won't be missing any of these either! (Again, really love this cast!) E.S.G. smiles from his typewriter in heaven! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/15/23 Full Review Aldo G Season one of Perry Mason offers up an impressive start with its Film Noir approach to the popular defense attorney's origin story. The revelation is Juliet Rylance as Della Street. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/06/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
