After renewing The Electric Light Orchestra franchise with the Part 2 moniker, Bev Bevan and company (including former-ELO conductor/arranger Louis Clark) released the self-titled Electric Light Orchestra Part Two, an attempt at renewing the original band's sound. Meanwhile 3 further former-ELO members, Kelly Groucutt, Mik Kaminski, and Hugh McDowell, were doing the same with Orkestra and their album Beyond the Dream. With 2 plus 2 equaling 4 (or, more accurately, 2 plus 3 equaling 5), the 2 units joined forces and released Electric Light Orchestra Part Two Performing Electric Light Orchestra's Greatest Hits Live Featuring the Moscow Symphony Orchestra (say that one three times fast, Bucky), an attempt to cash in even further.
As always, i'm on the fence when it comes to this band, halfway between original unit and tribute band. But if i am to be honest, they did do a better job at rekindling the 'light' than Mr. Jeff Lynne has at any point post-1986 (that sentence remains just as true in 2021 as it did when i first typed it 16 years ago in 2005). Simply put, this album (and the video counterpart) is a no-brainer for the ELO fan on your Christmas list, presuming the ELO fan on your Christmas list can get past the Lack of Lynne. No, the magic isn't fully there, and it is hard to make the mental leap beyond this being simply a 'tribute' band, but these guys did fill a void, and they filled it well.
