Video circulating on social media shows 16-year-old Nae'Shawn Naylor attacked inside Penn Hills High School just before 12 p.m. on Tuesday.
His mother says his resulting severe concussion kept him at the hospital for nearly seven hours for brain scans and other tests for internal bleeding and damage.
"Being a mother watching that, (it's) very devastating for any mother. To watch your son be stomped like he could have been lifeless, his head trauma," Shae'Rhonda Goodwine, mother of injured student, told Pittsburgh's Action News 4.
Goodwine says her son is at home now and suffering headaches. She fears what brain trauma can mean for his future.
"It can be devastating at any moment. It may not happen today, it may not happen tomorrow. The condition that he's in, it could be months from now. nobody knows," she said.
The video on social media shows a glimpse of a police officer near the end.
"For a police officer , your job is to protect and serve. And I feel as though that's not what was done. You could have grabbed a kid, pulled kids back. It's like you was waiting for your backup," Goodwine said.
Penn Hills School District Superintendent Dr. Nancy Hines provided this statement via e-mail to Pittsburgh's Action News 4:
"District administration was alerted to an incident that occurred midday yesterday at Penn Hills HS involving multiple students. Building-level administration continues to investigate and to review new video evidence that was offered earlier today, along with related social media banter. Currently, it is believed that one (1) student was initially confronted by another student, and five (5) friends associated with the aggressor also became involved. The main aggressor has been processed according to our District's due process protocol and is not onsite. Our due process protocol is in progress for the other students who have been implicated. Sanctions are anticipated, as per protocol, for any student confirmed to have violated District policy."
Penn Hills police also confirmed they have an active investigation underway which includes examination of security video from the high school building.
