The Book to Read (Study in Fact,) if You are Contemplating Financial Aid

I ordered this book a couple of months back for a friend whose daughter is starting college in September. I skimmed through it, just for memories, when it arrived. I noticed that it had even more material than when my son was in college. I got this book 4 years in a row while he was going to college. Believe me, just the section on how to correctly answer the FAFSA questions makes it worth it. Some of those FAFSA questions are not really asking what most people think they are asking. The book is even more useful if you are in a "special" situation (divorce, business situation, etc.) I recommend that you read a copy a few years before your son/daughter's freshman year for planning purposes. Some of the "recommendations" that you get from so called experts on TV and in popular magazine articles are totally off and implementing them would be like shooting yourself in the foot when it comes to financial aid. The book gives it to you straight. It takes all the mystery out. You will know how much you deserve and qualify for before hand. You will know what mistakes not to make.

A useful guide to a process as painful as doing taxes

Basically, filling out the FASFA is deceptively simple. Doing it to maximize your legally eligible aid is another matter.

We found a great deal of enlightenment in this book and kept it and the worksheets close at hand as we worked through our initial, estimated, submission for 2013-2014.

One really important fact was how the book explained the different treatment of Custodial 529's for public schools vs private schools.

I can't say if the book improved our aid eligibility, but we felt a lot more informed and to some degree, in control, during the process.

We are fast approaching college and feel the squeeze, while we haven't ignored it - the reality is harder than anticipated. I wish we had been more proactive overall. Would recommend parents to take their kids on college tours at younger ages even, as we visited one with our junior and took our 6th & 7th grade kids. I daresay the younger ones got as much, if not more, out of it. Who knew? They started thinking long term, which was fun to experience.

A friend & my child's high school career center recommended this title. If you are a parent who has resources for your child's higher education, this book will be very helpful. I am a single parent with no assets or college savings. This book had a very short chapter (NO index so it was hard to locate specific information) for single parents & it assumed assets. There is a small section towards the end for those with few assets. The primary focus of the book is how to maximize your ability to pay for college & get financial aid, especially if you have a house, dual parent income, college savings, or other financial resources. It also has long term planning sections, so even if your child is young, it's worth looking through for the ideas on how to deal with college in the future. My suggestion would be to check your local library for the title or borrow it from someone first to see if it will meet your needs.

This book clearly explains the ins and outs of the financial aid process. Also is a major myth-buster on lots of mis-information such as you can't get financial aid unless you are near poverty and others. And how about them plus loans? Phew, I probably would have fallen for that aid trap if I haven't read this book. A must read for anyone looking to finance a college education!
