      Critics Consensus

Pay the Ghost takes a weak stab at supernatural horror, but ultimately, it's only viewers who will pay for watching this sloppily assembled picture.

Diane S Nicholas Cage is a legend for a reason. This was the 5th Halloween movie we watched in 5 days on the build up to Halloween and it was the best out of the 5. Decent plot, decent acting and there was the extremely talented and underrated Nick Cage! Ignore the bad reviews. This is definitely well worth watching and with a run time of 1hr 34 mins there's enough to keep you entertained. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/02/23 Full Review Christian T Terrible, why Nicholas Cage felt the need to make this over budget B movie ( at best) is beyond me. The acting is bad, special effects are worse and story is another level down. Do yourself a favour, don't waste your time Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 06/01/23 Full Review Marie S I Just watched this movie and absolutely loved it! It is well done, if missing "bells and whistles" of the big, box office hits. Reminded me a bit of National Treasure. Loved it and already have it saved to Favorites file. It might deserve a much higher score with the potential to become a "cult classic," I think, for all folks who appreciate the "classic" supernatural thrillers. Well done!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/02/23 Full Review Jenny H A good story line with several solid opportunities for scares. While occasionally predictable, we enjoyed it. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/19/23 Full Review s l Honestly, don't bother. It seemed okay at first, maybe the first part was okay, not even the first half just the setup of the story. The rest was just plain bad, either bad acting or bad script or bad story, pick one. I expect a lot more from big budgets & a high paid actors. Must've been an April Fool's joke. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Elvis S Super scary movie with a great plot. Highly recommended Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/18/22 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Andrew Barker Variety If it's remembered for nothing else, and it almost certainly won't be, Uli Edel's "Pay the Ghost" can at least make a claim to being the first film to feature a haunted razor scooter in a horror setpiece. Sep 26, 2015 Full Review Brian Tallerico RogerEbert.com A new low for Nicolas Cage. Just when you thought he couldn't get any more apathetic about a role, he pops up in this lazy, boring retread of "Insidious" that even his most diehard fans should ignore. Rated: 1/4 Sep 25, 2015 Full Review Tom Long Detroit News Fine, sure, "Pay the Ghost" if you have to. But do not pay good American money to see the movie of the same name. Rated: D+ Sep 25, 2015 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review As for Cage, he’s done a lot worse, but he’s done a lot better too. Rated: 2/4 May 27, 2022 Full Review Emma Wolfe SpookyAstronauts It was so much content that you didn't know what bit to take seriously so it was just continuous scares throughout the whole movie instead of building it up. Rated: 4/10 May 19, 2021 Full Review Robert Kojder Flickering Myth Cage plays 90% of Pay the Ghost straight, which is a shame because his off-the-wall antics and expressionistic meltdowns would have definitely mitigated extreme boredom and lazy writing into something possibly worth remembering for laughs Rated: 1/5 Dec 3, 2017 Full Review Read all reviews
