Paul Winfield Obituary

LOS ANGELES (AP) – Paul Winfield, an Academy Award-nominated actor who was known for his versatility in stage, film and television roles, including a highly praised 1978 depiction of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., has died. He was 62.

Winfield died Sunday of a heart attack, said his agent Michael Livingston.

In 1968, Winfield played the boyfriend of Diahann Carroll in her situation comedy "Julia" – a role that some suggest helped open television to other black performers.

Four years later Winfield's portrayal of the father in "Sounder" earned him an Academy Award nomination for best actor.

He was Emmy-nominated for best actor in the title role of the 1978 miniseries "King," and nominated the next year in the best supporting actor category for playing a college chancellor willing to sing Negro spirituals to get donations for his school in "Roots: The Next Generation." He finally won an Emmy in 1995 for a guest appearance on "Picket Fences." He played a federal judge whose rulings on busing inner-city children are challenged by a local resident.

Despite acclaim, Winfield was often relegated to supporting roles, including playing Jim in a 1974 remake of "Huckleberry Finn."

Sidney Poitier hired Winfield for his first movie role in "The Lost Man" in 1969. Other significant roles included an appearance in the Broadway play "Checkmates" with Denzel Washington, and his portrayal of Don King in a 1995 HBO movie.

A Los Angeles native, Winfield was born May 22, 1941. Until he was 8, he was raised by union organizer Lois Edwards, who later married Winfield's stepfather.

He was bused to the predominantly white Manual Arts High School in Los Angeles and was named best actor for three years in a row in an annual Southern California high school drama competition.

He later studied drama at four colleges before leaving the University of California at Los Angeles six credits short of a bachelor's degree.

He is survived by his sister, Patricia Wilson, of Las Vegas.

For Paul...Your depiction of
Martin Luthor King was an
fablous bit of acting.

WEEP NOT FOR ME

Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.

Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.

I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.

Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

Know that others share in your pain. I am late sending this, but I miss Paul so much. He was one great actor. I always had a crush on him. He was very charismatic, and stood firm in all his films. He had a voice, that would make you stand to attention.

May 19, 2005

To the family of Paul Winfield may you find comfort in God's words at John 5:28 and 29 that read "Do not marvel at this, because the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out." Yes, God promises a resurrection right here on a paradise earth (a clean earth) with no one being sick and no more people dying. Isaiah 33:24; Isaiah 25:8; Luke 23:43; 2 Peter 3:13. A sound too good to be true doesn't it? But we can believe it because of what Titus 1:2 says, "God does not lie." Whatever he promises will come true according to Isaiah 55:8-11. At Revelation 21:3,4, there is described the earth as God promises it will be. Yes, he promises an end to mournful tears, pain, and suffering, sickness and death. Verse 5 adds that God will "make all things new." Just imagine, no more crime, violence or wars. Truly the meek shall inherit the earth as Jesus Christ promised in the Sermon on the Mount. (Matthew 5:5) May you draw close to God (Jehovah-Exodus 6:3; Psalm 83:18) in prayer, and the Bible promises that "he himself will sustain you."---Psalm 55:22

It was with such great sadness that I learnt of the death of this ebullient man. I was watching the Oscar 2005's "in memoriam" and I saw a picture of a young Paul Winfeld. Oh! Oh I was so disheartened to realize that Paul Winfield had passed away. Here it is Feb. 2005, and I just now found out. I love his voice on the "City Confidential" show. There couldn't have been a better person to narrate this show. My goodness, who will they get to do it now? He's irreplacable. The only one I can think of who would do a fairly decent job would be James Earl Jones. So sorry to here of his passing away. I certainly will miss him.

I am deeply saddened to learn of the death of Paul Winfield. I missed his voice/narration on A&E's "City Confidential" and learned from a friend that Paul had died. Man, will that voice be missed. It's just not the same without him. It just feels different when I watch it now without him narrating it and putting all that humor in the storytelling that made me anxious to watch the next episode. He was a great talent and will be deeply deeply missed by all who admired his work. Rest In Peace My Brother....

Mr. Winfield was one of a handful of black actors on television when I was a child. His roles always made me feel proud. When I would hear his voice I'd go running to the television because I just couldn't miss a Paul Winfield scene. To the people at A&E having to replace him...good luck, you're gonna need it.

When I heard that Paul Winfield had died I went to the internet to verify this. I just couldn't believe that I wouldn't be hearing his voice on City Confidential again. I was amazed to see a picture of him and discover that it was his voice. I knew his name but never connected Mr. Winfields voice from City Confidential to the actor. I believe that's a credit to his acting. His voice was magic. It simultaneously communicated mystery, sarcasim and impending doom. What a quality.

The reason I started watching "City Confidential" was because of it's narrator. When I saw the name, Narrator, Paul Winfield, I kept saying "I need to see who he is", never realizing, that he was an actor. I finally decided to check it out, unfortunately in March, only to find out that he had died two weeks before. I was saddened to hear that. His voice was mysterious, yet very ominous yet drew you in to the story line. There's no question that he's the reason "City Confidential" was such a success. He will be truely missed. After hearing of his death they played some of his movies & you could hear a little bit of his "City Confidential" voice, although it was played down some. I pulled up City Confidential, today, and it appears that Keith David will replace him. I think it would be nice if they would say why he was being replaced, cause they're may be a few out there that still don't know about Paul Winfield's demise. It's just a suggestion. I know the show must go on but I'm sure Paul would like that little touch.

A few years ago I was very thrilled to come upon "City Confidential" on A&E when I recognized the voice of its narrator. It is difficult for me to believe that it can be the same show without his dry wit and crisp narration.

Dearest Paul,

We could not believe the announcement on City Confidential and are bereft. God loaned you to us for a short, wonderful while. Your voice was unique in all of television and City Confidential will never be the same. It was our favorite show, and you, our favorite voice: tantalizing, ironic, witty, sarcastic, and soothing in its cadence. We started listening to City Confidential solely for your voice, and grew to love the show. What are we going to do now? All we have left is a distant second, Bill Curtis.

You are now looking down and commenting on our lives in your own inimitable and unforgettable way. Our hearts go out to your loved ones and all your fans.

We will always hear your voice.

We love you, Paul.
