Statement

'My paintings are oils on canvas or on board. They are always painted from the subject, from life. The process of painting or drawing things into the right place, getting the colours and tones, has become an unthinking response.

My paintings are about being impressed, letting the world in through me directly to the canvas, with least interference. I flatten the 3 dimensional world I see into a 2 dimensional painting, without any optical or technological aid.

I am painting the world around us, just a picture of the flesh, the matter made visible by life-giving sunlight, copied to the canvas before the sun moves too far, the bus drives off or the model complains and leaves...

It is painted in one go, to make it re-exist.'

Biography

Born in London 1956, Paul went to Dulwich College, Camberwell Art and Crafts School, and Hornsey Art School / Middlesex Polytechnic, graduating in 1979 with BA (Hons) fine Art.

He has been working since 1984 as part-time tutor of life drawing and painting at Kensington & Chelsea College in London.

He has exhibited extensively in the United Kingdom as well as in France and Germany.

He works in his South London studio, where he paints his models and he still lives. His landscapes are from London, Cornwall, France Germany and reach as far as Transylvania.

He has a special liking for bridges because of their beauty, their graceful strength and symbolic meaning.

Paul is a gifted portrait painter. His work has been exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery. Because his portraits are painted from life, not from photographs, they capture the essence of the person, rather than a transient expression.

His paintings have been exhibited at numerous Royal Academy Summer Shows, as well as at the John Moores Painting Exhibition in Liverpool, and the National Portrait Gallery.

Paul lives with his family in London.
