These were the sixth and seventh albums of new recordings, although presented here in the reverse order as Fancy was released before Patchwork. Some sources may claim these are her fifth and sixth albums, because they are excluding her duets album with Glen Campbell. A bit unfair that, especially as it was one of her most successful.
Fancy contains mostly covers, including I'll never fall in love again, her #1 UK hit that had also been included on Touch 'em with love. The title track was the only original song, and was written by Bobbie. It was not the big hit that might have been hoped for in America, but it attracted some interest and did better when covered by Reba McEntire, who had a top 10 country hit with it. Bobbie's own version was somewhere between blues, pop and country, and I suspect that was always her problem in raw commercial terms. She's the sort of singer-songwriter that really needs to be listened to in order to appreciate properly, and if you do, her music is fascinating and entertaining.
The covers on this album include Delta man (Joe Cocker), Raindrops keep fallin' on my head (a minor UK hit for Bobbie, but a much bigger American hit for BJ Thomas), Something in the way he moves (the James Taylor song, not the Beatles song) and If you gotta make a fool of somebody (a UK hit for Freddie and the Dreamers).
Patchwork, the first album here, is an album of original songs, all written by Bobbie. Like her other albums of her own songs, it is very a diverse collection covering all sorts of topics including Billy the Kid. I am intrigued by Your number one fan, but does she like having adoring fans or not? Maybe her early retirement from the music business indicates not really.
Bobbie Gentry was unique. Although the elements of her music can be compared to others, the way she combined them cannot. These two albums illustrate that clearly. Both are excellent.

Bobbie's last two albums of new recordings

This is the End...
Rezension aus Frankreich vom 8. August 2012

At Long Last, it is finallly here
Rezension aus den Vereinigten Staaten vom 13. Juni 2007
Bobbie Gentry's Masterpiece, Patchwork, has been long, LONG overdue for a release on CD. One of the greatest overlooked albums of the seventies, Patchwork is an incredibly intriguing collection of short stories set to nearly every musical style one can think of, with unforgettable melodies, great arrangements and, of course, Gentry's distinctive vocals. Gentry's stories of the American South, like her previous landmark efforts, Ode to Billie Joe and the often covered Fancy, are nearly all gems of poetry, with fully-realized characters, surprise plot twists and deeply felt emotions. And a lot of humor thrown in as well, which makes this record great fun. Had she been a novelist instead of a songwriter, she could have been one of our country's greatest authors, and her stories would have made for some great films. I'm glad I was around long enough to hear this stunning work in such crystal clear sound. My worn, scratched LP of this can now be put to rest. As a bonus, we get the whole Fancy album as well, although it is mostly a collection of covers that contains only one Gentry original - the title cut, which has proven its status as an American classic in remake after remake. It is a great loss to us all that Bobbie Gentry no longer writes and records, but at least she left us this. Thank you, thank you, thank you, Raven for this wonderful gift.

A Superb Double Album
Rezension aus dem Vereinigten Königreich vom 23. Mai 2015
This is a superb double album on one CD that I found advertised only recently. High quality sound, all tracks stereo, excellent Australian production, congratulations to all involved. Used to play the original LP, "Fancy", almost to destruction! The songs are classy, and so well performed by such a delightful lady. The familiar title track has great lyrics (as do most on this album) - what a tale! I love all of the tracks, but my personal favourite is the foot-tapping "He Made A Woman Out Of Me". Marvellous! Hesitate not, go buy!

FANCY THAT
Rezension aus den Vereinigten Staaten vom 14. August 2008
My wife turned me on to Ms. Gentry and these Australian reissues are superb. She simply was ahead of her time. I wish Capitol didnt put so much schmaltz on her tunes but her voice and style make it through.
Dear Ms. Streeter we hope you are doing well.
