Product Description
In a time of war, an extraordinary group of women turned a song of hope into a symphony of triumph. From the director of "Driving Miss Daisy" comes a true story of courage, triumph, friendship and strength starring Glenn Close ("Dangerous Liaisons"), Oscar®-Winner Frances McDormand (1996 Best Actress, "Fargo") and Emmy Award Winner Julianna Margulies (TV's "ER"). This compelling drama reveals the heroic actions of a group of women held prisoner by the Japanese during World War ll. These diverse women from different countries, speaking different languages, unite to form a vocal orchestra-creating a life affirming symphony of human voices.

Excellent portrayals in a story about courage and about the power of music. It's the universal language. IMO
THE movie was intense. It was hard to watch part of the film. But the whole movie is very well done! Superb! I loved the fact that in such horrible conditions, the strong help the weak and ultimately a beautiful women's choir is created.

The entire cast are very good and not just the 'big names'. The smaller supporting roles are also very well done (the Dutch nun, Jennifer Ehle's Dutch friend, Adrienne's chums from Singapore, the brief but memorable role of Wing) as are the roster of Japanese guards. I thought that I might find the musical element of the movie too 'corny' but it works very well - even the scene between Adrienne and The Snake. On the other hand, the movie is often surprisingly brutal. It is shocking to witness such severe punishment for relatively minor incidents especially when one remembers that these things really did happen - and worse! The only real fault, to my mind, is that (as some others have pointed out) the women really do look too healthy throughout and especially at the end of the movie after three and a half years of deprivation.
I would recommend this movie but if you enjoy this then I would also recommend 'Tenko' which simply has more time to flesh out its cast of characters.
