Hmmm a little split over this doc.
I really liked how they included how politics really played a huge part in how the crisis was dealt with, something that not a lot of material around this topic does.
BUT, if you’re going to make a film all about how the decisions made at the time were unpopular but necessary you think they would go deeper and actually explain to the viewers why...
Also they spend a disproportionate amount of time (aka the entire time) talking about all the things they did right and mentioned nothing about the mistakes they made. Aka all the times they **cough cough Ben Bernanke** ignored signs of the housing bubble and the lack of supervisory…
This doc features extremely unethical people who are framed as heroes for stopping the very thing they should have been preventing. It also features interviews with two presidents, Bush and Obama, and many of the players. That said, this is a must see if you’re interested in economics/the mechanics of what stopped the 2008 housing crises from shutting down the global banking system. Or really to the point, the nature of Wall Street bailouts. Worth noting, Mike Pence, no matter where you look in history, is a royal piece of shit. To quote Alan Greenspan “If they’re too big to fail, they’re too big.”
this documentary infuriated me because it ended up being everyone who caused the financial crisis patting themselves on the back for it not being as bad as it COULD have been. i don’t want to listen to ben bernanke, who ignored multiple warning signs about the real estate bubble, talk about what a good job he did in making sure not ALL of people’s houses were foreclosed and not ALL of people’s retirement funds disappeared. we shouldn’t have had to bail out all these too-big-to-fail institutions because they shouldn’t even BE in the position that failing takes down the system as a whole. they never should have been allowed to do every single risky thing that led to their inevitable…

absolutely the most high profile doc i have watched about the Great Recession. provides an angle on how Washington dealt with the crisis in a way similar docs do not. also god bless hank but also not

Not sure if I loved the quick jump at the end claiming how all of this lead to the rise of populism in America (an interesting thesis that should have been elaborated on rather than slapped onto the end) but a lot of the interviews presented here were fascinating.
True panic is watching this and realizing that the people who constructed the response to the 2008 financial crisis are not in those positions anymore, and that if presented a similar crisis under this administration, we’d be completely doomed. Because those men are leagues ahead in intelligence (an understatement), and because we just don’t feel that lucky anymore.
I don’t usually review my cleaning the dishes YouTube longform essays, but this one is remarkable and is hosted for free by the Council on Foreign Relations, so you know the think tanks think it’s an appropriate medicine for populism (it’s not).

I understand why this doc is divisive, but it’s a straightforward, factual telling of the 2008 financial crisis. It has some great insight from those that were involved, as well as Austan Goolsbee and Andrew Ross Sorkin. You get a sense of how close the global economy was to complete collapse and why difficult, wildly unpopular decisions had to be made.
