SUPERB 3CD BROADCAST RECORDING FROM THE JGB IN 1976 Formed in 1975, the Jerry Garcia Band remained the most important side project of its esteemed leader through the remainder of the great man s life. Despite the group only making very sporadic recordings - their first album Cats Under The Stars wasn t released until 1978 and remained the only studio LP by the group they toured regularly, particularly during Grateful Dead downtime. The line-up of JGB was a regularly changing phenomena, although by late January 1976 it was set until August the same year as Jerry Garcia on guitar and vocals, John Kahn on bass, Keith Godchaux on piano and vocals and Ron Tutt on drums. And it was this talented collective who performed at the Paloma Theater in Encinitas, CA on February 21st 1976 for a show broadcast on FM radio along the west coast of the US, to the delight of those fans who were unable to get hold of a ticket. Featuring an eclectic mix of numbers including a few Grateful Dead classics, a couple of oddities and a vast array of exceptional covers, the complete show the band played that evening, lasting over 3 hours in total, is now available for the first time on this exceptional 3 CD set.

This show is more mellow than others. Not one of my favorite recordings or shows for sure.
Disc One (67 minutes) has good things like "I Second That Emotion" (15 + minutes), "They Love each Other" (7 + minutes), "Knockin' On Heaven's Door" (19 + minutes), "Who Was John" (13 + minutes), and "Mystery Train" (12 + minutes). The easy way this band plays "I Second..." is a nice way to start things off. "Knockin'..." is another lengthy gem that's taken at a very slow, languid pace that sucks you in. The traditional "Who Was John" is a nice surprise with the band handling this tune in a typical JGB way. The lengthy performances give the band ample room to play, with some good soloing.
Disc Two (69 minutes) continues things with "Friend Of The Devil" (another slow and easy version), "Tore Up Over You" (in a lengthy medium fast tempo), "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" (at an emotionally slow tempo), "I'm A Roadrunner" (which is stamped with that JGB sound), "The Way You Do The Things You Do" (another highlight to my ears), "Catfish John" (rarely heard but cool nonetheless), and "A Strange Man" (with the unnamed female vocalist out front.
Disc Three (70 minutes) has "The Harder They Come" (13 + minutes) which sounds similar to other versions we've all heard, "Mission In The Rain" which has a plaintive sounding Garcia vocal, "My Sisters And Brothers" (another "quiet" sounding performance that builds slightly, "After Midnight" (9 + minutes) that builds a bit of speed but is still taken slowly, "Moonlight Mile" (11+ minutes) a Jagger-Richards tune that's played beautifully, "How Sweet It Is" is another good version of this well known JGB played tune, and "Talkin' 'Bout You" which ends the show on a nice note with a medium-fast tempo and some nice vocals.
Garcia gets chances all through this relatively mellow show to shine and he does. Maybe not as slinky sounding as he did later on with other JGB shows, but still with that particular sparkle his playing seemed to have. Godchaux too gets solo space and uses it nicely. And With Kahn and the great drummer Ron Tutt, the rhythm section is just right.
The three discs snap into a double CD jewel case. The six page booklet isn't really all that much, with a short essay on the band, a couple of b&w photos from another time, a color photo of the La Paloma Theater, and a repro of the poster advertising this show. The jewel case slips into a pretty flimsy cardboard box with flaps at each end.
As I write this, this is not readily available. But if you're a deep fan of the JGB this is worth hunting for. Over three hours of early Garcia with his favorite band outside of the Dead, and with a good band playing alongside him, in a smallish venue in laid back Encinitas, Ca., on a laid back set of tunes. This is a good contrast to the latest JGB release from '93 (Vol. 11 from Providence, R.I.) with some of the same tunes--sort of a set of bookends showing how good the JGB was on stage from early on up through near the end.

Es ist eine schöne Mischung mit Songs anderer Songwriter (u. a. Dylan, Cale, Dozie/Holland, Jagger/Richards) sowie Eigenkompositionen (Friedn of the devil, They love each other, Mission in the rain).
