Palisades Park Closure Extended

Los Angeles County COVID-19 cases over 2,000

By Sam Catanzaro

The City of Santa Monica has extended the closure of Palisades Park as the number of confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) countywide surpasses 2,000.

On Friday, March 27 the City announced that in addition to closing the beach and beach bike path under a Los Angeles County order, Palisades Park would close over the weekend. On Monday, the City announced that the Palisades Park closure has been extended until April 19.

The beach, beach bike path and beach access points remain closed until April 19 as well.

Despite the park’s closure, Palisades Park was still in use over the weekend with people walking, jogging, working out and using the bike path.

While the County order gives cities the authority to penalize violators, the City said the Santa Monica Police Department is “focused on education”.

The Santa Monica Mirror has reached out to the City asking if any additional enforcement measures will be pursed. At the time of publishing the City has not responded yet.

As of Monday, there are 2,474 cases of COVID-19 in Los Angeles County, including 44 deaths and 47 confirmed cases in Santa Monica.
