Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings, help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

the multi-talented Roy Wood is one of the great Lost Geniuses of British Rock, no doubt about it, underappreciated and mostly only known for a certain seasonal hit single. His work with The Move, ELO and Wizzard aside, he was also responsible for at least two stunning and critically-acclaimed solo albums that are now largely forgotten (Boulders, his first, is long overdue a CD re-release). This fascinating collection gathers together his lesser-known but utterly brilliant songs, not only from his latter days with Wizzard (songs from the belatedly-released and hard-to-find "Main Street" are here) but also from the excellent "Mustard" and its follow-up, "On the Road Again", which was barely released at all. Each show what a great songwriter and singer Roy Wood was, and how adventurous he could be, working in an unearthly fusion of swing, rock, Beach Boys harmonies and old-fashioned rock 'n' roll. This compilation manages the feat of giving a great overview of his talents and work while avoiding the over-familiar. "Way Beyond the Rain", a stunningly beautiful track (despite some rather over-emphatic drumming), ends the album and leaves you wanting more. It's a pity that Mr Wood seems to have been relegated to the nostalgia trail, as I'm sure he has lots more to offer, and could show the current scene a thing or two about rocking out. The music scene needs characters as colourful and as talented as Roy Wood. Buy this album and find out why.

You may get disillusioned when the first track asks Are You Ready to Rock?
Well, before you answer the question take time out, get your tartan trousers, platform shoes, put make-up on your face and mess up your hair, if you have any that is. Then sit back with your converted hi-fi vacuum cleaner, open a few cans of that Wizzard magic potion and listen to a repertoire of songs from the late 70's and early 80's of a musical maestro, pop genius and rock legend Mr Roy Wood.
All of the tunes here will be well known by the avid follower who will appreciate the remastering of the tracks and a neatly prepared booklet showing photographs portraying his many guises from that era especially the one of Wizzard in Roy's back yard. Every song has a different musical style ranging from Pop, Rockabilly to Jazz-Rock incorporating many of his musical influences. From the Spectorish backings, Beach Boy's harmonies, Hendrix guitar breaks and Zeppelin style drumming.
Roy as ever plays every musical instrument wherever possible including bagpipes and also as a tongue in cheek stab at his old mate Jeff Lynne with On Top of the World. Way Beyond the Rain is a classy ballad with Roy at his best. Rattlesnake Roll is amazing rockabilly, spot the steel guitar on this one. On the Road Again is typical rocking Roy. While the kids give a helping hand on Sing Out the Old..Bring in the New. Which I feel is a perfect ending to a person who deserves his Ivor Novello award for his collection of songs over the years. Here's to the next remaster or a live compilation of Roy's greatest hits....???
