ORLANDO, Fla. — Ahead of the 2023 Major League Soccer (MLS) campaign, Orlando City SC has signed defender Rodrigo Schlegel to a new, two-year contract through 2024, with Club options in 2025 and 2026, it was announced today.

Schlegel, 25, joined the Lions on loan ahead of the 2020 MLS campaign after starting his career at Racing Club of Argentina’s Primera División. Since then, the defender has appeared in 72 matches with 52 starts across all competitions as part of a City defense that set a Club-record with 10 shutouts this past season.

“Rodrigo has continually proven himself an invaluable member of our Club, both on the field and off,” said Orlando City SC EVP of Soccer Operations and General Manager Luiz Muzzi. “He’s engrained himself into our team from the very beginning of his time with us with an incredible work ethic and dedication to achieving the team’s goals. He’s been a vital part of our culture and project here in Orlando and we’re so happy to have him here for the years to come."

The Argentine defender has been an important part of Orlando City since joining the Club, most notably helping win the penalty-kick shootout to give the Lions’ their first playoff win in Club history over NYCFC in 2020 and helping secure the clean sheet against Sacramento Republic FC to win the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in 2022, the Club’s first trophy in its MLS era.
