Only the Brave

Louis Tomlinson

Only the Brave Lyrics

[Verse 1]
Pour mercy, mercy on me, set fire to history
I'm breakin' my own rules, I'm cryin' like a fool
Tall stories on the page, short glories on the fade
I been close enough to touch, but I never cared for love

[Pre-Chorus]
It's a church of burnt romances
And I'm too far gone to pray

It's a solo song and it's only for the brave

[Chorus]
If the truth tell, darling, you fell
Like there ain't enough dying stars in your sky
It's a tall tale, and it's only hello, hello, no goodbye (Goodbye)

[Verse 2]
Pour mercy, mercy on me, I'll fall upon my knees
And they'll say, "I told you so
Come on, when you know, you know"
All the lonely shadow dances from the cradle to the grave
It's a solo song and it's only for the brave

About “Only the Brave

Only the Brave” closes out the album suggesting that love is only for those who are brave and take risks. The track features a harsh-sounding acoustic guitar backed by a crackling sound that gives off a classic feel.

In October 2019, Louis stated that this was the only song of the album that he did not write on. In November 2019, the track was registered on ASCAP with Louis only listed as a performer, giving away that this would be the last track on the album. Louis does in fact have writing credits, as he later mentioned in an interview with Crash Records:

Only the Brave” I think may have been written for Liam Gallagher. It’s the one song I didn’t write much on. It was played to me and I instantly adored it. There was talk of making it longer, but what’s great is that it’s so short, yet gets its message across so clearly.

  • What have the artists said about the song?

The crackly sound goes way beyond my production comprehension. The way the guitar was recorded, I don’t know. But what I love about that song is that it feels classic, like going back in time. It’s one of my favorite songs because it doesn’t have a traditional structure. You only really get the chorus once. You haven’t heard a song like that the whole record, and then you get it at the end. There’s something interesting about that.
