      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Worth watching for Tom Hiddleston and Tilda Swinton's performances alone, Only Lovers Left Alive finds writer-director Jim Jarmusch adding a typically offbeat entry to the vampire genre.

Aender S A different and welcome take on the vampire legend. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/14/24 Full Review Timjan H Vampires, great environments, angles and settings, Tilda Swinton, Jim Jarmusch and SQURL... What is not to like? Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/16/24 Full Review Angelo R Not really a horror movie but, a beautiful portrayal of enduring life and love. Spellbinding story, easy to be entranced by. I was pulled in and thoroughly beguiled by the story and especially the actors. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/16/23 Full Review Alec B I love Jarmuusch's confidence here. Excising plot is just what the vampire genre needed. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 11/10/23 Full Review Adam H I liked the vibe and brooding characterization. It has lots of those, for half of the movie, before there's much of a conflict. It's really miscategorized as "comedy" and slightly miscategorized as "romance." It seemed like the connecting thematic thread was about remaining "civilized" and "modern." Sarah Mirk Bitch Media The film is mostly a fun, sweet character study, but it's enjoyable flow is marred periodically by its own desire to be cool. Jan 20, 2021 Full Review Jason Bailey Flavorwire Somewhere around the lovely scene of Tilda Swinton dancing, freely and wholeheartedly, to the old soul record, Jarmusch's M.O. becomes clear: 'Only Lovers Left Alive' is a hanging-out move, just with vampires. Jun 18, 2016 Full Review Jonathan Romney Film Comment Magazine It makes for one of the most enjoyable and artful pieces of cinematic dandyism in the Jarmusch catalog, and for all its poised flipness, one of the saddest and most serious. Jul 1, 2014 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies It’s a slick, stylish, and moody character piece that doesn’t shy away from asking good questions and prodding reflection. Rated: 4.5/5 Aug 24, 2022 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review After settling into the unhurried reflections of Adam and Eve, the mellow film carries on with a pacing that's both bewitching and quietly absorbing Rated: 3.5/4 Aug 15, 2022 Full Review Nikki Baughan AWFJ.org A sparkling script and charismatic cast injects a new burst of life into a genre that's become pallid and toothless...
