Biography

  • Celine Dion was born 30 March 1968 in Quebec, Canada. She initially found success as a teen star singing in the French language, but later transitioned into the English language in 1990. She would eventually go on to become one of the most successful pop stars in music history.

Though much of her claim to fame is tied to her English-language studio albums, she never abandoned her roots in French music (in fact the majority of her albums are in this language). Her 1996 release “Falling Into You” won album of the year at the Grammys and the following year her hit “My Heart Will Go On” picked up an Academy Award for best original song. It went on to sweep the 1998 Grammys being accoladed with Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Female Pop Vocal Performance and Best Song Written Specifically for a Motion Picture or Television. This song has become immortalized in pop music history and remains an inseparable part of the film “Titanic”. Perhaps her first real breakthrough to the American mainstream was spawned by her performance of the title track of the classic 1991 Disney film “Beauty and the Beast”. The classical thematic tone of the song established the framework for her sound that she is so known for in the United States.

Her music in the French language is by no means overshadowed by her English language releases. After all this was the language in which she first began her pursuit as a singer. In fact her early work impressed manager Rene Angelil so much that he mortgaged his house to provide the funding for her debut album “La voix du bon Dieu”. Angelil remained important to Dion in both her professional and personal life as he acted as her manager and was also her husband.

Dion seemed to get more and more popular with each release and started breaking records with her 1995 album “D’eux”. This album sold over 10 million copies making it the best-selling French album of all time and with 4.4 million copies sold in France it also became the best selling album ever in that country. She is the second best selling female artist in the US only to Mariah Carey and is the best selling Canadian artist of all time.

Though some critics argue that Dion’s sound is uni-dimensional she has proven to expand outside her zone of mechanized, larger than life pop and introduce various forms of world music and different styles of pop music. She delved into more hip-hop and urban oriented territories performing duet with the likes of R. Kelley, Stevie Wonder and Ne-Yo. Her album “Falling into You” sought to reach a broader audience and incorporated more eclectic sounds such as Spanish guitar and African drumming.

Dion has a very large list of musical influences though some of their styles may not be evident in her own music. Artists like Creedence Clearwater Revival and the Doobie Brothers make the list as well as more obvious choices such as Edith Piaf and Cher. Dion has also re-popularized songs from her musical heroes such as Roberta Flack’s “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” and Frank Sinatra “All the Way”. As for those who Dion has influenced the string of names is overbearing. She has inspired everyone form like-minded divas such as Beyonce, Katy Perry and Rihanna, experimental R&B singer Frank Ocean and even indie twee-pop groups like Los Campesinos.

Live reviews

  • An internationally known singer, Celine Dion’s live concerts are a wonderful musical experience. The atmosphere was surreal, with a large stage and intense lighting. Her dresses were beautiful and she had several costume changes throughout the show. Large screens allowed a great view for even those in the nose-bleed seats.

Overall the focus remained on Celine; there were none of the flashy visual effects or elaborate dancing that are present in some shows. The back-up vocals and band members provided a wonderful background for her smooth and rich voice. She performed a mix of some of her classic numbers as well as some new hits.

Celine’s vocals are undisputedly rich and powerful and they filled up the concert hall beautifully. She truly cares about the performance she gives and seems to relate to the audience well.

Despite the fact that she has already obtained her fame and fortune, she still gives 110% in all her shows. Celine’s voice was always emotional and mesmerizing. After the concert the entire audience gave a standing ovation and she gave two encore numbers that were just as striking as her other numbers.

Celine Dion is a classic singer whose concerts are the perfect experience for almost anyone.

  • Celine Dion, one of the most internationally recognised female artists of all time is still clearly impassioned to play to her loyal and large fan base. Despite her classically balladic voice, her concerts are an energetic spectacle and although often performing exclusively in arenas she makes sure every audience is able to enjoy the visual elements of her gigs.

Several costume changes, huge screens and impressive lighting displays add to the overall show yet never distract from the classic songs such as 'Think Twice' and 'The Power of Love'. At 46, you would also imagine the Canadian's vocal may be wavering but fortunately it seems strong as ever when hitting the long notes of 'Love Can Move Mountains'.

She explains to the audience that she will also be performing some covers by her personal favourite artists. These include a lively rendition of two of Queen's biggest tracks, 'We Will Rock You' and 'The Show Must Go On' and a rock heavy 'River Deep, Mountain High' by Tina Turner. Now with energy levels at all-time high, she returns for a pitch perfect rendition of the infamous 'Heart Will Go On'. A sublime way to bring a variable show to a close.

  • Celine Dion is an absolute Goddess. Her show was absolutely incredible, and the entire time I was awe struck at the realisation that I was in the presence of a musical legend. She has one of the most powerful, emotive and beautiful voices I have ever heard in my life. Some of her songs actually brought me to tears because they were sung so beautifully and with such meaning. Although Dion’s more famous songs are mainly covers, she also sang originals including some of her early French songs, her original language. Classics such as ‘Because You Loved Me’, ‘The Power of Love’, ‘It’s All Coming Back to Me Now’ and (to my delight and surprise) ‘Beauty and the Beast’ were all sung, almost all of them bringing a tear to my eye. ‘Alone’ was also a highlight of the night, as Dion delivered an extremely powerful and almost aggressive performance, and the song changed the tone of the night. However, the crux of the night was, of course, ‘My Heart Will Go On’. By the time the chords had struck for the song, I was feeling emotional. When Dion began to sing, I was a wreck. It was the most magical performances I have ever seen in my life.

  • Her show was wonderful . She is funny and made us laugh out loud many times . She is also very personable and interacts with the audience .

A lady was dancing and crying with her husband during

Because you Loved Me and she actually stopped singing to ask her why she was crying . The lady dropped her hair pin and Celine pointed it out to her and sang just for them .

Her performance moved me to tears on more than one occasion during “Its All Coming Back To Me Now”

I tried to hide it because I didn’t want her asking me why I’m crying I’d probably bawl my eyes out

    Her costumes were elegant .

    I’d go again

  • I was so excited when I found out Céline Dion was coming to perform in The Netherlands! Some say she's dated, others only know her from the Titanic soundtrack. I'm one of the younger fans, but I love her music and the way she sings. She was on my bucketlist for a long time and I'm glad I got to see her.

She's so lovely with the audience. Once she starts talking, she really likes to keep going. She even said she got a warning from the people working behind the scenes that she needed to stop talking haha.

Céline Dion, you've been amazing and I'm so happy to finally get to see you perform live!

  • The show was amazing. It was the very first time that I saw her live and I was honestly blown away. She sounds sooo good live! And I loved the fact that she interacted with us, and cracked some jokes and she honestly went from being this amazing super star to a human being I could relate to. Her performances, the outfits, the songs, the new album, the musicians and singers that were with her... everything was amazing. I had an awesome time.

  • She is so INCREDIBLE. Her voice is as strong as ever. The show is flashy

She gets the audience signing and swaying and crying! She has a band and orchestra. Multiple seamless costume changes. She is also HILARIOUS. She had a few jokes to share with the crowd and had a way of making everyone feel important. She sang one of her songs in French. The emotion she put behind the song had everyone crying with the beauty.

  • Does she need a review? NO!

The epitome of greatness, perfection, love, attitude, passion and dedication.

Even if you only know one song (which is quite impossible), you need to go see her live.

I may be biased, since I had been waiting for this moment my entire life, but she just goes above and beyond.

Celine is timeless, a true gem for all generations; had the most wonderful time, thank you!
