Before she made a memorable mark on The Crown as Queen Camilla, one of the earliest roles of Olivia Williams‘ career was a two-episode stint in Friends in 1998.

Though the show was a hit, Williams confessed that she had a rather “alarming” experience filming those two episodes.

“Well, just as an example, I was taken to the studio in a shared car with a wonderful actress whose character, I think, was called ‘Old Woman,’” she recently told The Independent.  “At one point, a producer – who shall remain nameless – just yelled at her: ‘You’re not funny!’ And she didn’t come back the next day. So that was alarming.”

She added that the actress, whom she was not able to identify by name, was “distinguished” and “very good.”

The red flags didn’t end there. Hair and makeup also turned out to be a rather stressful experience, as well.

“Oh,” she said, “and Friends was a brand, and you had to fit the brand.”

“You go into hair and makeup and you’re told, ‘There’s a look here, this is what we do.’ And that involved, essentially, plucking off all of your eyebrows,” she said. “Literally [I was begging], ‘Please don’t take my eyebrows off, I might need them in another job!’ But yes, that’s the sense in which it was harrowing.”

The actress later joked in the interview that she may have said too much. “Maybe I’d have a lot more work if I shut up more,” she said with a laugh. “I might actually be on some socialist actor blacklist, I don’t know…”

Williams appeared in one of the most iconic episodes of the show. She was in Ross and Emily’s ill-fated wedding in London where Ross accidentally calls Emily by Rachel’s name at the altar. It was a two-part storyline that took place during the Season 4 finale and the Season 5 premiere. Williams played Felicity, a bridesmaid who kept hitting on Matt LeBlanc’s Joey Tribbiani.

Thus was the start of her ambitious career. She’s since starred in The Sixth Sense, An Education, Anna Karenina and more.
