Abstract
This chapter surveys the major methodological problems involved in the study of Old Spanish. It begins with a survey of the names used in the Middle Ages for the local Romance vernaculars. The chapter next identifies the regional varieties of medieval Hispano-Romance There follows an overview of the rivalry between Latin and the Hispano- Romance vernaculars as the written language of administration and culture. The chapter next describes the earliest vernacular texts and the effects of manuscript copying and transmission on our knowledge of the medieval language. It concludes with a discussion of the extent to which the written sources offer insights into the spoken linguistic reality of the time, and of the role of discourse traditions in the choice of linguistic variants.
