Sharon Senefeld is the ex-wife of Tunch llkin, was a Turkish-born American sportscaster and American football player. He served as a radio and television analyst for the Pittsburgh Steelers from 1998 to 2020. He is distinguished by being the first Turk to play in the National Football League.
He played offensive tackle for the Steelers from 1980 to 1992, earning two Pro Bowl appearance honors (1988 and 1989). He played for the Green Bay Packers in 1993 before retiring from soccer. He served as vice president of the NFL Players Association from 1989 to 1994.
After retiring from soccer, Ilkin began appearing as a commentator and sports reporter on sports broadcasts in the Pittsburgh market. His popular segment, titled Lunch with Tunch, featured interviews with Steelers players and coaches. Ilkin worked as a game analyst for NBC during the 1995 NFL season. He was paired with either Dan Hicks or Jim Donovan.
In 1998, he joined the Steelers’ official broadcast team of Myron Cope and Bill Hillgrove as an analyst. After Cope’s retirement after the 2004 season, the team decided not to replace Cope, and Ilkin took over the color commenting duties that Cope once assumed. He worked alongside sideline reporter and former teammate Craig Wolfley, who, like Ilkin, joined the Steelers through the 1980 draft. Ilkin and Wolfley hosted a morning radio show called In The Locker Room with Tunch and Wolf at WBGG. The show was canceled in the summer of 2006. The show now appears every day during the football season on 970 ESPN in Pittsburgh.
Ilkin worked as an analyst at Fox Sports Net’s Pittsburgh affiliate and wrote articles for NFLHS.com, a website for soccer fans. He was senior vice president of the Athletic Training Network, a company that provides athletic training and program material to coaches and players.

Tunch llkin Cause of Death
Tunch Ilkin, a two-time Pro Bowl offensive tackle and all-time member of the Pittsburgh Steelers team, died Saturday morning at the age of 63 after a battle with ALS. Ilkin, who served as the team’s announcer after his playing career, announced his retirement from the booth in June to focus on his ALS treatment. He was diagnosed in October 2020.
“We are heartbroken over the passing of Tunch Ilkin,” Steelers president Art Rooney II said in a statement. “He was a man of faith who dedicated his entire life to being a devout Christian and family man. His passion for soccer was evident in his daily life. As a player, he struggled to overcome the difficult times of being cut and injured, but He continued to impact as the leader of our offensive line and made two Pro Bowls.

“After his playing career, Tunch continued to impact our community in many ways. In all, Ilkin spent nearly four decades working in professional soccer. He was selected by the Steelers in the sixth round of the 1980 NFL Draft from Indiana State and played 14 years in the league (13 with Pittsburgh). He then spent the last 23 years working as a radio analyst for the Steelers.
In July, Ilkin was named to the Steelers Hall of Honor and was scheduled to be inducted into a ceremony in November.
“Today we lost a great person, but God won an incredible angel,” current Steelers defensive tackle Cam Heyward said of Ilkin in a social media post. “Your love, faith, openness, and strength will be remembered forever. I am lucky to have spoken to you and gotten to know you. May you be at peace brother. RIP TUNCH.” Ilkin’s death comes days before the Steelers kick off their 2021 regular season against the Buffalo Bills.
