Truman during his lifetime was vilified for some of his decisions, for example, for firing General Douglas MacArthur for insubordination. But his famous comment "The Buck Stops Here" was a genuine guide to his thinking.
This book of letters and memoranda by Truman show what kind of person he was. In a Cabinet meeting about General MacArthur, he describes himself as collecting views without revealing his intention to relieve MacArthur of his command. Prior to the decision, we see a long string of insubordinate actions. The President visited with MacArthur and thought he had a firm commitment from the General to lay off the back talk. That belief was quickly shattered.
Although Truman was the only President in the 20th century who did not have a college education, he is considered by recent surveys of historians as one of the five greatest presidents we have elected.
Not that Truman would have cared what a panel of historians said about his big decisions. Here is what he wrote sometime in 1954:
"I wonder how far Moses would have gone if he'd taken a poll in Egypt. What would Jesus Christ have preached if he'd taken a poll in Israel? Where would the Reformation have gone if Martin Luther had taken a poll? It isn't polls or public opinion of the moment that counts. It is right and wrong and leadership - men with fortitude, honesty, and a belief in the right that makes epochs in the history of the world."
If you like reading original materials, this book is a goldmine. The editor fills in information about each period of Truman's life to help guide the reader through the collection. In addition, the index is excellent.
