Guys, I genuinely can't stop listening to Temporary Secretary. It's actually really good : r/beatlesSkip to main content
Just kidding, but I still find it funny Lennon inserting the darkest Beatles lyrics ever into a light hearted paul McCartney song. Can you imagine that day in the studio?
Definitely was on my mind, close second, the reason being Lennon really did beat and keep her apart from the things that she loved.
On the other hand he was okay with Yoko sleeping with other guys when he was with may pang temporarily, so "run for your life" is far less scarier than getting better.
Lennon was a weird dude, but Ringo beat his wife more than anybody else in the Beatles thought. That too, the bond girl Barbara Bach.
That was an Elvis lyric that John used. John later said that "Run For Your Life" was his least favorite Beatles song, and he only wrote it because he still had to contribute something else to Rubber Soul and rushed that one out.
Used to be a hard skip for me when I first bought McCartney II. Then the ear worms set in.
Whenever I play this for people, I can’t understand the perplexed grimace, the concerned side-eye I receive.
I feel like a Lovecraft protagonist who’s discovered some kind of ancient cosmic truth and has gone mad because of it lol
Edit: got a lot of likes for this comment! Wanna use this as a platform to say that a lot of McCartney’s weird or mid-mediocre songs are like this for me. “Secretary” is just an extreme example. Like I love “Give My Regards to Broadstreet” and “Driving Rain” for Pete’s sake. Anyone else experience this phenomenon? Paul’s music is just infectious even if can trend towards off-putting every once in a while. “Say you don’t love him, my salamander.” I love that shit.
She could be a neurosurgeon, if she’s doing nothing urgent…. Love that song! Only problem is, even when it’s finished….it stays in your head…..and will not leave for hours!
Is Check My Machine like Temporary Secretary 2? I get why people dislike Temporary but seriously?! I don’t see the dislike for Check My Machine at all.
I remember first hearing it on a cassette where I'd taped a couple hours of the Doctor Demento show from the radio. I was 11 or 12 at the time so it would've been in 1981 or '82. I don't believe i'd fully made the connection that this song was by a former Beatle.
About 10 years ago I started really getting into Paul's solo discography, checked out McCartney II, and absolutely fell in love with it! I most adore the tracks Secret Friend, Check My Machine, Dark Room, Waterfalls, One of These Days... Seems like it's pretty ahead of it's time stylistically, too. Being a multi-instrumental musician myself i find this album (and McCartney I) to be super-inspiring.
I dated an executive assistant when I was getting into McC 2. It became our weird couple song, Then Paul came to town and we went to see him at Busch Stadium. That English mfer played Temporary Secretary! What are the odds?
It’s one of my favorites on McCartney II. One Of These Days and Coming Up are some of my favorite songs on the album but I love the instrumentals and Bogey Music
I love goofy tracks. Wildin Honey Pie, The Beach Boys “Ding Dang”, Temporary Secretary, You Know My Name, etc. it’s so fun to see the silly side of these iconic songwriting legends—almost like you’re hanging out with them and a part of the inside joke, for me at least.
It’s one of my favorite Paul songs unironically. And the fact that he pulls this and this whole great and interesting album out in 1980 just adds to his legend as a genius.
So as someone who doesn’t know any Beatles lore, was Paul taking some kind of conscious altering substance during the making of Temporary Secretary? Or did he just kind of feel like sounding like that
I know I will be roundly criticized for saying this, but I absolutely cannot stand Coming Up.
And while I like Bogey Music, I think that McCartney II would have been much stronger as an album if Paul had got rid of that, Temporary Secretary, Coming Up, putting each one of those tracks on different, subsequent albums.
These are filler, frivolous tracks, rather than great songs, so I would like to see him minimize the use of those tracks.
I had never heard the song before, so I just listened to it for the first time. Omg it’s so bad!!!!! I am a huge McCartney fan, but this song is comically bad. Lol
Once you've heard it, you'll never unhear it. BABYMETAL is a band that you'll either love or hate.
Amuse producer Key Kobayashi delved into the unknown and fused Idol (J-Pop) and Metal, creating a sub-group of Sakura Gakuin: BABYMETAL!
Having blossomed in Japan, they exploded into the Western world after their first album release in February 2014. Going on to tour the world within just four years of their creation, they really have taken the metal scene by storm.

"I used to be cruel to my secretary I beat her and kept her apart from the things that she loved " is an all time lyric
I actually hear this. Like the melody of getting better with the temporary secretary electro riff in the background
Just kidding, but I still find it funny Lennon inserting the darkest Beatles lyrics ever into a light hearted paul McCartney song. Can you imagine that day in the studio?
I think "I'd rather see you dead little girl than to be with another man" is even darker, what the fuck was wrong with John

It's from "Baby Let's Play House" by Elvis.
That was an Elvis lyric that John used. John later said that "Run For Your Life" was his least favorite Beatles song, and he only wrote it because he still had to contribute something else to Rubber Soul and rushed that one out.
He's just a jealous guy
He stole that one from Elvis.

An ancient cosmic synthesizer
Whenever I turn it on, everyone looks at me weird. So I just hit them with the goofiest smile known to man
Listen to check my machine
Of all the songs they discussed in McCartney 3,2,1, Check My Machine was the one Paul really got into:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=THX2H3BeQ4k
One of my favourites from the era. Sounds like Toad from Mario singing it.
Will do
She could be a neurosurgeon, if she’s doing nothing urgent…. Love that song! Only problem is, even when it’s finished….it stays in your head…..and will not leave for hours!
I used to have that, but then I realised my iPod was set to loop.
🤣
Agreed, it’s my favorite McCartney solo song by far, for some weird reason.
Join the secretaries
Is that a threat?
It's a calling
You gotta admit the cover captures the vibe. It's the 80s and Paul's getting weird with it!
Tbh though Coming Up is a banger, opening the album with that and following it up with this is so weird.
I too have been listening to this song a lot lately and yeah, looking back at this album's vibe and that cover it's just so perfectly 80s.
Also to think that this was exactly 10 years after the Beatles split and yet feels decades removed from the Let it Be album.
And I love it
Whenever I feel small, I just turn this on and STRUT
CHECK!
MY MACHINE!
(9 minute version)
Every morning when you wake up
Good luck w/ your sanity!
Is Check My Machine like Temporary Secretary 2? I get why people dislike Temporary but seriously?! I don’t see the dislike for Check My Machine at all.
It might be a permanent secretary for you then...
It's my favorite song on the album :D
I remember first hearing it on a cassette where I'd taped a couple hours of the Doctor Demento show from the radio. I was 11 or 12 at the time so it would've been in 1981 or '82. I don't believe i'd fully made the connection that this song was by a former Beatle.

Slightly higher than the odds of Slayer or Beyonce playing it?
Paul has had the most amazing variety of music. From mull of kintyre to temporary secretary
Actual headbanger for sure
It’s one of my favorites on McCartney II. One Of These Days and Coming Up are some of my favorite songs on the album but I love the instrumentals and Bogey Music
“Bogey Music” is one of the funnest songs I’ve ever played, I love everything about it!
Paul's a genius, this song proves it.
Yes, it is a very good song
I'm not a big fan of their solo work (I actually think the quality dropped quite a bit) but this is one of the solo songs that sounds good to me.
I was geeked seeing him play this live. I too, unironically, love it
The entire first side of that LP is awesome. I just listened to it yesterday. I think 'Waterfalls' is a killer Mccartney track
The song is unhinged in the best way. Like Paul found a bag of coke and an arpeggiator and just sent it
Edit: typo
Well then you need to hear Alex Ball's excellent breakdown... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F1xpvmyTceE
You are all Devo fans!
Are we not men?!
And you are correct.
I NEED A
I is really good and I am in the same situation as you. Started off not liking it, but it grows on you over time.
I once put Temporary Secretary on the Jukebox to play 10 times on my way out of playing pool🎱
Mccartney 2 is definitely my favorite solo paul tied with off the ground
The whole album is so good, still don't know why it's so underrated and overlooked. It's Paul's best work after Ram!
I honestly cannot tell if it's good or not. But I enjoy it.
what’s your favorite song on it
The song is great; the whole album is
How I Became the Bomb recorded an excellent cover of it about a decade ago
You can sing it with the lyrics of Paperback Writer
How the fuck did I only just realise that wow
I've been in a McCartney II mood recently, the whole thing just has such a fun sound!
I LOVE the song and McCartney II is one of my all-time favorites. Weird Paul is such a treasure!
Check out this piano cover, it’s BRILLIANT:
https://youtu.be/e192SRS5X5w?si=xUwkh6F3Xuk6BcQZ
so real
Really the only song on that album I regularly listen to, only found out later that it’s heavily ridiculed
The first time I heard this was actually Paul performing it live at a show in 2015. That was definitely an experience when you didn't see it coming
I just realized that if you cut the song in half, double the vocal track and raise it up a tritone, then you'd basically have a Residents song.
I didn't know it was going to be in the set in 2016, and it was amazing.
Thanks this is a cool track. I struggle with a lot of Paul’s solo stuff.
i like it more now. hated it when it was released
I love this song

We know.
It’s one of my favorite Paul songs unironically. And the fact that he pulls this and this whole great and interesting album out in 1980 just adds to his legend as a genius.
I just can't with this one
On Sight by Kanye West wouldn’t exist without this song
So as someone who doesn’t know any Beatles lore, was Paul taking some kind of conscious altering substance during the making of Temporary Secretary? Or did he just kind of feel like sounding like that
Yes
Glad you get something out of it. I HATE it along with the rest of that forgettable crappy garbage album Should've stopped at McCartney 1
I love this song
I think it's all right.

Love this song, especially his brief aside about how hard it is for girls these days to stay on the right track
I greatly respect how immediately off putting it is
outjerked again
I really like it tho
Just listened to it for the first time. It's awful 😖
Do what I did and listen do it more and more until it consumes your being
Paul has to stay away from synths forever. Worst case being the awful Wonderfull Christmas Time.
I had never heard the song before, so I just listened to it for the first time. Omg it’s so bad!!!!! I am a huge McCartney fan, but this song is comically bad. Lol
Trust me, it grows on you. In a good way.
