2 Sterne. Langweilig.
Kundenrezension aus Deutschland 🇩🇪 am 15. September 2004
Bobbie Gentry did not record many albums but several compilations have been released. Because Bobbie only had a few big hits that have to be included, the remainder of each compilation often differs significantly. For example, this UK compilation includes a number of cover versions but no duets. Other compilations may include more self-penned songs or some of her duets with Glen Campbell.
Of course, this compilation includes Ode to Billie Joe (an American number one and British top twenty hit) and I'll never fall in love again (a British number one hit). Perhaps these two songs, more than anything else, show the difference in tastes between British and American listeners. Ode to Billie Joe is a Bobbie Gentry original - a classic country song with a bluesy edge. Contrast that with I'll never fall in love again, a mainstream pop song written by Bacharach and David, first recorded by Dionne Warwick (and not to be confused with the Tom Jones hit of the same title). Following her British success, Bobbie became a TV presenter and this affected her recordings - she sometimes selected material that would appeal to her TV audience.
Apart from Ode to Billie Joe, there are some interesting self-penned originals here, these being Mississippi delta (the flip side of Ode), Fancy (a minor American hit, later revived by Reba McEntire), Touch em with love, and Reunion. This collection was meant to include Chickasaw County Child, but instead included Papa, Won't You Let Me Go To Town, a different song. So there are just six of Bobbie's own songs here but you can find more of her songs on other compilations.
There are plenty of covers. Son of a preacher man was a huge hit for Dusty Springfield. You've made me so very happy was originally written and recorded by Motown's Brenda Holloway, but it was Blood sweat and tears who had the hit. In the ghetto was a transatlantic hit for Elvis Presley. Hushabye mountain is a song from Chitty chitty bang bang. Skip along Sam is an obscure song by Donovan, a Scottish folk-rocker inspired by Bob Dylan.
This is a great collection of Bobbie's music, showing all aspects of her music except her duets. Nevertheless, if you are primarily looking for her own songs, you should look at the alternative compilations.

Country Soul
Kundenrezension aus Großbritannien 🇬🇧 am 1. Februar 2013
To say she didn't have many hit singles, there are quite a few Bobbie Gentry compilations on the market. This is the best because it's got the most eclectic mix of her styles. Although there's nothing to indicate a remastering, the sound is very good AND it's also way cheaper than nearly all the others.
There are the obvious big hit singles - 'Ode To Billy Joe' and 'I'll Never Fall In Love Again' - plus the minor US hit 'Fancy'. The latter typifies Bobbie's own compositions in that it tells a poignant story; a young woman finds herself on the 'wrong side of the tracks' and uses her charms to better herself. The musical setting of the latter song is a cross between country and blues - what would be termed 'Americana' today.
Thrust into the Vegas and television show limelight it's no wonder she turned out so many cover versions. Some of these, which appear on her studio albums, are awful but here you get the pick of the good ones. 'Son Of A Preacher Man' equals the Dusty version and 'In The Ghetto' is hauntingly moving whilst 'You Made Me So Very Happy' shows that horns and strings don't necessarily mean easy listening.
The brilliant 'Girl from Cincinnati' brings us close to West Coast rock with its electric keyboards and rocky guitar. 'I Wouldn't Be Surprised' and 'Apartment 21' take us into singer-songwriter territory; the former has a similar piano riff to 'Go Now' and has a wonderful love lorn weariness to it. 'He Made A woman Out Of Me' and the final four tracks on the album bring us back to the south - gritty, funky rhythms and small town country life lyrics.
There is one cheaper compilation, 'The Very Best Of Bobbie Gentry' but it's got far too many naff cover versions and far too little of her more esoteric compositions. This, then, is the best purchase.

Southern Bell gives 'em Hell
Kundenrezension aus Großbritannien 🇬🇧 am 5. Februar 2019
So I initially thought when buying this album, that I would be getting a whole heap of country music, but not even close. Instead “Ode to..” is a mix of easy listening, funky & folk music. Lyrically the subject matter of her songs ranges from suicide & ruthless bosses, to squabbling child sibling & a song featured in chitty chitty bang bang.
I know it’s often an over used phrase when discussing music, but Gentry is a real unique talent, who’s music is an absolute joy to experience.

Kundenrezension aus Großbritannien 🇬🇧 am 24. März 2009
Country music has been stuck in the rut of conservatism for so long it's easy to forget just how funky Nashville could be in the late 60s. Indeed it would be wrong to pigeon-hole Bobbie Gentry as merely a country artist, as much of her output was cut in Memphis and compares well with Dusty Springfield's contemporary soul material and Nancy Sinatra's sassy pop. The connection is obvious on 'Son of a Preacher Man', which almost touches Dusty's definitive version, but also comes through on originals such as 'Fancy', a ringer for Tony Joe White's 'Willie & Laura Mae Jones' (also covered by Dusty) and 'I'll Never Fall in Love Again'. Gentry's independence from the machine was also reflected in her lyrical themes, particularly in morality tales such as 'The Girl from Cincinatti' and 'Ode to Billy Joe' - it's hard to imagine anyone recording, let alone having a worldwide hit with the latter, a song about abortion and suicide, in Nashville nowadays.
