Notes

Nude is the eighth studio album and a concept album by the English progressive rock band Camel, recorded September 1980 and released January 23, 1981. The album is based on a true story of a Japanese soldier (Hiroo Onoda) marooned on an island in World War II who doesn't know that the war is over. 'Nude' derives from his family name 'Onoda'. Most of the album is composed of instrumentals with only a few tracks containing lyrics. The album's lyrics were mainly written by Susan Hoover (2), except "Please Come Home", which was written by Andrew Latimer. It was the last Camel album to feature original drummer Andy Ward (2), and the last Camel album to feature more than one original member.

Performed by:
Andrew Latimer – guitar; vocals / Colin Bass – bass guitar; vocals / Andy Ward (2) – drums, percussion
Additional musicians:
Mel Collins - saxophone / Duncan Mackay – keyboards / Jan Schelhaas - piano / Chris Green (4) - cello / Gaspar Lawal - percussion /
Herbie Flowers - tuba

Just gorgeous in every way. The cover art, the concept, the music. This pressing with it's oversized transparent OBI strip and heavy grade vinyl is simply...perfect. My second fave Camel album after Mirage.

I'm happy to have purchased the recent reissue of this beautiful Camel album (imho one of the 3 best). Good dynamics, respected sound stage, it sounds very "solid" unlike the european reissues of the 80s. The real problem is the support: it is not the first time that the Czech GZ Media offers a low quality product: my pressing is slightly wavy and it is full of cracks and clicks. The situation improved after a thorough wash but the opinion on this company is negative again.
I also own a Japanese print ( https://www.discogs.com/release/2830845-Camel-Nude-%E3%83%8C%E3%83%BC%E3%83%89MrO%E3%81%AE%E5%B8%B0%E9%82%84 ) which sounds just as good, a little brighter and on silent, flawless vinyl.

Probably the best this album will ever sound. Very well mastered with lots of dynamics. Airy sounding with careful use of compression. The gatefold sturdy and nice. The record is flat and clean and came in a white polylined inner sleeve. The only error is that it has Moonmadness written on its spine.

Nice to have a new copy of this, though it must be a rare error for the wrong Camel album title (Moonmadness) to be stamped on the spine.

Points for: interesting concept, plays to Camel's instrumental strengths, pockets of good music, great cover

Points against: concept mishandled, world music influence, '80s keyboard patches, Andy sings, the most literal lyrics in the history of recorded music

Despite the nostalgia I have for Nude (being my first ever Camel album) this album really feels rather underdeveloped and the production certainly doesn't help, feeling rather dry and hollow which definitely hamper what is an instrumental heavy release. It doesn't help that the vocal pieces like City Life and Drafted are incredibly schmaltzy. Its a rough outing to be sure. At least it made me curious about the albums subject, Hiroo Onoda. Fascinating story of human survival, despite emphatically believing he was still fighting a war that had ended 30 years ago.

Very VERY underrated concept album by Andy and the band. Well written lyrics and music compositions. Many of you prog heads need to re-visit this gem. Like fine wine aged in a lost cellar many of you will rediscover this one. Without Pete Bardens in the line-up the band had a different edge but Andy kept the core progressive institution in the music compositions alive. Not a Snow Goose but still an excellent effort by very competent group!
