REU: Summer 2023 Applications Now Open

The Northwestern Department of Mathematics is organizing a Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) for students interested in dynamics in summer 2023. The 8 week program includes mini-courses, working in small groups with a research mentor, talks on current research in dynamics, and professional development. Participants will receive a living stipend and be provided with housing and meals on campus and are expected to be in residence June 20-August 11.

Homotopy 2023

The Emphasis Year is designed to investigate particular topics in mathematics over the course of an academic year.   For 2022-2023, our Emphasis Year on Homotopy Theory will feature a variety of events throughout the year, including a Spring 2023 Homotopy conference, in part to honor NU Mathematics faculty member, Prof. Paul Goerss, for his contributions to the field.

NU Math Dynamics Group Featured in Weinberg College News

Northwestern University's Mathematics world-leading Dynamics Group is featured in this recent article of the Weinberg College News, highlighting the leadership of our Dynamics Group faculty members as well as the new $2.5 million Research Training Grant received from the National Science Foundation.  This will expand research, enliven student interest, and elevate Northwestern University’s standing in the fast-charging field of dynamics.

NU Math Faculty Receives ASG Nominations

The Associated Student Government (ASG) collects nominations for the annual Faculty & Administrator Honor Roll from NU UG students. In the past year, over 100 students provided thoughtful and complex portraits of 2021-2022 faculty and staff who they believe made a powerful and exceptional impact on their Northwestern experience. NU Mathematics faculty members Prof. Aaron Peterson, Prof. John Alongi, Prof. Ursula Porod, Prof. Michael Maltenfort, and Prof. Santiago Canez received award nominations.

Prof. Auffinger Elected 2023 Fellow of AMS

NU Mathematics faculty member, Prof. Antonio Auffinger, has been elected a 2023 Fellow of the American Mathematical Society.  Auffinger was cited for his “contributions to probability theory, mathematical physics, and, in particular, to the study of spin glasses and percolation theory”. The AMS, founded in 1888 to further the interests of mathematical research and scholarship, serves the national and international community through its publications, meetings, advocacy and other programs.

Steve Zelditch 1953-2022



Steve Zelditch, a Founder of the Field of Quantum Chaos, Is Remembered as an Enthusiastic Mathematician, Colleague and Teacher

Professor Steve Zelditch, an esteemed and much-loved member of the NU mathematics department, tragically died of cancer on September 11, 2022. We held a memorial event for Steve Zelditch on Wednesday October 26, which included talks on Zelditch's work followed by a memorial reception.   Please click on the 'Read More' for the article from Northwestern Now.
