1999 – 25 years ago

  • The call for “tax cuts now” went out from the Capitol steps at a rally to pressure lawmakers and Gov. Jesse Ventura to hold down spending and sign off on tax cuts.

1974 – 50 years ago

  • For the first time since World War II, the Coast Guard has begun a push to enlist young Midwestern women into its ranks.
  • Earth Week will be observed in this area by environmental improvement activities from tree planting to bird study. The Quarry Hill Nature Center is the site of most special activities.

1949 – 75 years ago

  • This month, the U.S. Army will double the number of men it will take from this area. At present, the army needs men from 17 to 35 years of age who are physically fit.
  • Left-handed President Harry Truman threw out the first pitch from the Presidential box at Washington’s Griffith Stadium on Opening Day of the 1949 major league baseball season. (The Washington Senators would beat the Philadelphia Athletics 3-2).

1924 – 100 years ago

  • Three local individuals were injured this week while cranking their cars. The automobiles backfired, causing one badly sprained wrist and two broken arms.
  • Two Ford Coupes were stolen last night from city streets. The license plate numbers are B-61792 and B-17952.
  • The superintendent of the State School at Red Wing told the Kiwanis Club that juvenile crime is primarily related to “the spirit of the Jazz Age.” He said that work needs to be done to build back the self-respect of these wayward boys.
