Former Georgian Football Federation President appointed FIFA Director of Strategic Projects

Nodar Akhalkatsi, the Former President of the Georgian Football Federation, has been appointed FIFA Director of Strategic Projects and Member Association Governance, after serving as the Director of Member Associations Europe, the international football body announced on Wednesday.

The Georgian Public Broadcaster reported the role of Akhalkatsi had “grown considerably” with the appointment, becoming one of the heads of the FIFA office in Switzerland.

Akhalkatsi is the son of Nodar, the former coach of Dinamo Tbilisi club and the first President of the Georgian Football Federation. The new FIFA Director of Strategic Projects held the position of the GFF President between 2005-2009 and worked as the Deputy Head of the International Department at the national body.

He also has experience working in UEFA committees. In 2018, Akhalkatsi was leading the organising team of that year’s World Cup at the body, the Public Broadcaster said.

Elkhan Mammadov, who held the positions of the General Secretary and Executive Vice President at the Association of Football Federations of Azerbaijan, will take the vacated post of Akhalkatsi starting May 1.
