"He wrote songs you could dance to, songs you could fuck to, songs you could cry to and songs you could go batshit to. NIN's integrity may be compromised by the alleged fanbase of angsty teens; and the greatest album on earth, The Downward Spiral, is the only full album immune from the occasional slip-up and the odd cringeworthy lyric, but, as hard as it may be to believe, he's only human. And, Reznor is one hell of a producer, too. Some of the music this one-man band has made over the years isn't rivaled by anything or anyone. Not to mention he's probably Jim Morrison reincarnated, with David Bowie and Iggy Pop's ear for music, Leonard Cohen's emotional turbulence fused on top of industrial soundscapes that can only be described as a mixture of Ministry, Aphex Twin and Brian Eno; all brought together by the innovative mind of the genius that is Trent Reznor. Most importantly to me, though, is that he created my favourite album ever, for which I'll be forever grateful."
RYM Rough Guide for Nine Inch Nails
Biography
Working as a janitor in a recording studio, Reznor recorded his first demos during off-shift hours. After the band signed to TVT Records, the reworked versions of these demos were released as the band’s Synthpop-influenced debut, Pretty Hate Machine, in 1989. The album became one of the first independent records to receive platinum certification. After a feud with TVT on the band’s creative direction, Reznor signed to Interscope, forming Nothing imprint. The band’s subsequent release, 1992’s Broken EP, marked an Industrial Metal direction.
Nine Inch Nails released its second full-length, The Downward Spiral, in 1994; the record received commercial success and critical breakthrough. Album’s second single, “Closer” and its controversial music video received significant airplay. The band’s third record, The Fragile, was released in 1999. The Ambient-influenced concept album attained positive reviews and commercial success. Nevertheless, Reznor survived from a life-threatening drug overdose in the accompanying tour in 2000; as a result, Nine Inch Nails entered a hiatus and Reznor was admitted to rehab. This period was plagued by a lawsuit between Reznor and his former manager John Malm, Jr., which Reznor subsequently won in 2005.
In 2005, Nine Inch Nails released With Teeth. This was followed by a political concept album Year Zero in 2007. Following a dispute with Interscope, Reznor released 2008’s instrumental Ghosts I-IV and The Slip under a Creative Commons license on his The Null Corporation label. Nine Inch Nails entered a second hiatus in 2009, with Reznor focusing on film score composing and the side project How to Destroy Angels. In 2013, Nine Inch Nails resumed touring and released its eighth studio album, Hesitation Marks. Following the inclusion of long-time collaborator Atticus Ross in 2016, the band has released Not the Actual Events EP, the first part of a trilogy. The second and third instalments, Add Violence EP and Bad Witch, were released in 2017 and 2018, respectively.
