But when a major storm starts moving in, it appears that Adrienne's perfect getaway will be ruined -- until a guest named Paul Flanner arrives. At fifty-four, Paul has just sold his medical practice and come to Rodanthe to escape his own shattered past. Nights in Rodanthe, Nicholas Sparks

Nicholas Charles Sparks is an American novelist, screenwriter, and philanthropist. Nights in Rodanthe is a romantic love and loss story novel, first published in September 2002. Adrienne Willis is 45 and has been divorced for three years, abandoned by her husband for a younger woman. The trials of raising her teenage children and caring for her sick father have worn her down, but at the request of a friend and in hopes of respite, she's gone to the coastal village of Rodanthe in North Carolina to tend the local inn for the weekend. With a major storm brewing, the time away doesn't look promising...until a guest named Paul Flanner arrives. ...

Nicholas Sparks is the romance genius. He is able to create stories of people falling in love, like no author I have read a book from yet. He puts so much emotion and feeling into the pages, that after one of his books, reading another romance seems boring.

Having read almost all of his books, I decided to finish all the ones I haven’t read, and when I suddenly encountered this one in the library, I told myself – ‘’Hey, why not?’’

The synopsis was intriguing, as all of his books are, but unlike the others, Nights in Rodanthe left me disappointed. With his books – this was the first time I ever felt like that. And that is why I need to mention this.

First of all, the story is very predictable. Too predictable – even. I knew what was going to happen from the very first chapters, and I was expecting at least a little bit of a plot twist, but nothing really happened.

Secondly, the romance was fake. The falling in love part? I didn’t see it. I just can’t imagine people falling in love in three days. I am sorry – but it is impossible. Crush, interest, lust, someone paying attention to you, and you feeling goosebumps – I can understand it all. But in three days, I can’t imagine anyone falling so deeply for one another, that you can’t look at another person ever again, and they are all you think about, all day.

Honestly – how well can you get to know a person in three days? Will you get to know the real person? When you’ve never seen them sad, angry, how they behave in company, how they behave when drunk, when upset, when they are doing daily chores, like going at work (note – this all happened while they were sort-of on vacation).

I can remember how many summers I have spent going on vacation for ten days, and thinking I was in love with someone. I am sure you have gone through the same.

So, knowing all this above, I just couldn’t feel for these people as I used to feel with many from Sparks’s characters in other books. And don’t judge me, that this would be the sole reason why I rate this book the way I do. After all, it’s a romance novel.

On the other side though – it is an emotional novel. If you, for a moment forget how fast this romance happened and how unreal it is, the story is going to deeply hurt your soul, and crush you into pieces. Fake romance or not, you are going to shed a few tears for sure.

To wrap this up – I didn’t like it. I am not into fake, impossible romance. But this book seems to be a hit or miss, so if you like Nicholas Sparks – I still encourage you to read it. You never know, it might be your favourite book from him so far.

First off, I'd like to offer myself as exhibit A in the case against the hypothesis that carriers of the XY gene are love story averse. Though I must admit that partly the reason for my reading this novel is Diane Lane. What can I say? Shes really pretty.

With that said, I was a little, well... disappointed with this one. I've never read a Spark's novel before but enjoyed the silver screen version of The Notebook so I was expecting something a lil more I suppose. If I could use one word to describe this book it would be juvenile. Paul and Adrienne were a couple of molly-sues and from the very beginning they were superfluously fawning. Too many moments of furtive glances and declarations of admiration. The pages were fraught with Paul and Adrienne thinking how beautiful the other was too the point were it just seemed silly. But I suppose, silliness is one of the many faces of love, most prominent when a third person is observing it.

Personally, I prefer love stories with a moderate amount of subtleties. I don't like it when authors spoon feed their readers the personality of their characters. I think it's much better when their personalities manifest themselves through action, through cause and effect and so on.

Though there were moments, particularly nearing the end, where I was mildly choked up with emotion, I wouldn't not suggest this to read but I wouldn't say its a must read either.

Amanda has lost her husband, so her mother sits her down and tells her the story of her and Paul. The two met in a hotel and as luck would have it, Paul was the only guest and the weather was terribly bad. Adrienne and Paul immediately sensed that there was more between them and it wasn't long before they were emotionally and physically close. Because of Paul's family, he had to leave and that was the end, but also the beginning. The story, tells of several relationships and family dramas, that are so different and yet they have one thing in common. As always, Nicholas Spark describes an intangible love and touches hearts with it.

Of all the books I've read of Nicholas Sparks, I've realized they all have twists. Twists you wouldn't think would happen in this story line. All of his books seem like they have all the same story line but like I said its a twist. You think you know what will happen but you're wrong. Keeps you on your toes. And never want to put them down.

I watched every movie adaptation of Nicholas Sparks' novels but I never cared to actually read his novels which made me feel like I was cheating on this author. I thought it was kind of unfair that I benefit so much from his stories by merely watching the movie adaptations. So, when I saw my chance at retribution through a book sale, I automatically laid my eyes and hands on this book and yes I braced myself for the tears and the death common in Sparks' books which I indeed encountered in this book but after reading this book, the empty corners of my heart and mind were once again satiated with rich and beautiful life lessons.

Just a bare-bones list of what I SHOULD/COULD have done with the 2 hours it took me read this sorry excuse for a book:
1. Cleaned my bathroom
2. Painted my daughter's bedroom BEFORE more paint gets spilled
3. Cooked AND ate a romantic dinner with my husband, which would be much better for my marriage anyway
4. Gave myself a MUCH needed mani and pedi
5. Weeded my garden
6. Caught up on laundry
7. On and on and on...
8. And last, but not least, read ANY OTHER BOOK, I mean, besides another one by Sparks.

I have to state, the reason I read this was because I saw the movie preview and I like Richard Gere. The preview didn't seem that bad and the book was getting high marks. Everyone talks about how Sparks is such a great author, but I just don't get it. Yeah, his books are supposed to MOVE you, to make you feel, cry, whatever. But not only are his characters COMPLETELY unrelatable, (i.e. super-perfect humans who have been poorly treated by something for absolutely NO reason whatsoever), but Sparks exploits his readers feelings by using universally tear-jerking situations. Of course you're going to cry if someone you love dies. Of course you're going to cry if your husband/wife cheats on you and leaves you for a better/younger model. Of course you're going to cry if you have a miscarriage/lose a child/anything bad happens to do with your children. It doesn't take special talent to insert your bad situation and then add as much melodrama as possible. I especially like his uber-Christian porn...they looked at each other, they had overwhelming feelings, so much couldn't be said, she led him to the bedroom and they made love. At least if you're going to read romance, a little sex would be nice, describe how these perfect people show their perfect love that has begun in less than 24 hours, and isn't premarital sex wrong, or is that only for the young? Haha! Meh. Sappy, unrealistic and unenjoyable. Like I said, I'm glad that I only wasted 2 hours of my life, because I really can't find anything to appreciate about this book, other than its over.

*** I would have given it ZERO stars, but its like having terrible service at a restaurant...if you leave nothing behind, people might think you just forgot. It really WAS that God-awful...

What I learned from this book is merely a confirmation of something I already know because I have children - most parents willingly and without hesitation make tremendous sacrifices for their children. They will put aside their own wants and needs and sometimes personal happiness so that their children's lives go on uninterrupted and relatively normal. Usually the children are unaware of what they have been given.

An older mother shares with her grieving daughter a yet untold story to help her daughter move on with her life and to be a good mother to her own children after the loss of her husband and their father.

Adrienne shares the story of how as a middle-aged divorcee she meets a man (the only guest - conveniently!) while keeping a seaside inn for her good friend. He is recovering from a divorce and a life lived selfishly and is on his way to make amends with his adult son. They are instantly attracted to one another and a romance begins in the midst of an approaching hurricane. (I just love stormy night stories!)

It is a typial Nicholas Sparks story who is terrific at writing a story that women enjoy. It is also typical in that you may need a tissue near the end of the book. All in all a quick read, a good even if predictable story and a good message all wrapped up in the end. Can't wait to see Diane Lane and Richard Gere in the upcoming movie. Thanks to Donna for recommending and loaning the book.

Well shit, this book broke me. I cried so much while reading Nights in Rodanthe it isn't even funny. I don't even have any wine to help me cope with this book.. and I need to fix that situation ASAP.

I feel like I need to stop forgetting what Nicholas Sparks can do to my heart. Please stop torturing my heart sir!

Okay, so Nights in Rodanthe definitely made me cry and fall in love with Adrienne and Paul. God, their love was so real and unique. It was hard not falling in love with them. From the moment they first met at the Inn, I starting shipping the hell out of them. Then when they finally acknowledge their feelings for each other I was giddy AF people. HOWEVER, the ending shook me. Broke me. I cried over the letters he wrote. CRIED PEOPLE.

Other than that I loved how Adrienne told her story to Amanda, because in some way it reconnected their love and relationship as mother and daughter. While also helping Amanda cope with her own loss. I really enjoyed Adrienne and her kids - even if they are all grown up because her relationship with them is really special.

Overall, I cried a lot while reading this book. It was so freaking sweet and heartbreaking. I will probably never get over the ending and will always see it has a happy one: Loved the book. Hate that it made me cry. I need wine.

The story captivated me from beginning to end and I thought it was very well written in a smooth, easy-(and fast)-to read format. But, I want...need...expect my romance books to have happily every afters (HEAs) and this one did not. It bothered me that Adrienne did not go on with her life, that she made decisions for herself based on the lives of her kids (that were not young) and she paid for those decisions in later years when she was left alone. Everyone is entitled to have a life of their own. She would expect that of her kids (and did) and her father (certainly) expected that of her.

What other options did she have? She was committed to her father's care; however, Paul's plans could have shifted and they could have both gone to Ecuador or waited until Mark found himself and returned... or a slew of other alternatives besides what ensued. Depressing.

Sad face from This Reader.

She had fallen in love with a stranger in the course of a weekend, and she would never fall in love again. The desire to love again had ended on a mountain pass in Ecuador. Paul had died for his son, and in that moment, part of her had died as well.

Apart from this world full of deceit, anguish and hatred, there exists a world full of love, sincerity and longing and I want to live there. Sparks, hats off to you, you made me think this.

I had rarely come across the books in my life that brings tears in the eyes and you still don't want to put it aside, I loved to go on with this little book full of love while I walked home after alighting from office vehicle, in the elevator and while having a breakfast and when not....

I am awestruck, I am dazed, I am aggrieved,
I cannot write much about the storyline, one word summarizes it - Hypnotic
I don't want to write about the Adrienne and Paul - one sentence for them - A duet of love
I don't want to write about the Author - one word summarizes him - The Master

Lastly, my favourite line from the book itself that summarises my feelings for this book,
In the few days I spent with you, You became my dream.

This book left me feeling conflicted. A few years ago I probably would have loved this book and given it 5 stars. I used to be such a sap for anything (which explained my love of twilight) but now I'm more sensible.

I'll start with the positive things about this book. First of all, I liked the books message. Adrienne wanted her daughter to understand that even though she was grieving the loss of her husband, she had responsibilities to look after her children. My dad died when I was 15 and my mother was a lot like Amanda in respect to how she dealt with it. I really felt for Amanda and I was happy that Adrienne's story really got through to her. I also liked Adrienne and I liked how she was conveyed. Everyone thought she was ordinary and it's only after her story that her daughter acknowledged how strong and extraordinary she was. I liked that.

The writing also left me feeling conflicted. I can't decide whether Nicholas Sparks is a brilliant writer or a mediocre one. Maybe he is both. The writing in this novel is very descriptive but the book is so short that it shouldn't have needed it, I thought a lot of it was unnecessary waffle. Sparks would sometimes go off explaining something and I got annoyed because I just wanted him to get to the point.

He always seems to conjure up a story about two people who are missing something from their lives and then when they meet, their lives magically become complete. I don't believe that someone can make your life complete but I suppose if you're missing a person then it's a little more believable. I think a lot of thought goes into how Spark's characters will meet, fit together (too perfectly for it to be entirely believable), fall in love (too quickly in my opinion) and then either live happily ever after or not (his books seem to go both ways). Saying this though, I'm not sure if that's good. It feels too forced and that gives his stories an insta-love vibe most of the time.

There was definitely insta-love in this novel. Like major insta-love. For one they both spent a lot of time describing how beautiful the other one was. We get it, they're perfect. I won't deny the fact they had a connection but again it felt forced. The romantic part of me will ignore that for a minute but I just don't know why Sparks made them love each other like 36 hours into meeting. I think he should have played the strong connection card and then built up the love with the letters and calls but then I suppose they couldn't have "made love". Which brings me to the next thing that annoyed me. Adrienne was talking about how people shouldn't have one night stands or sleep with lots of people (nothing like a bit of slut-shaming!) but then like a page later she was bringing him upstairs to bang him, oh no wait sorry - to "make love". You can't justify that with the excuse of love when it just doesn't seem like love. I think they were both yearning for companionship and those few days in the Inn made them think that what they had was love.

All that said, I enjoyed how it was light and quick. You didn't really need to give this book much thought. I would recommend it to romance readers. This isn't my first Nicholas Sparks book and it probably won't be my last.

Dibilang happy ending nggak.

Jadi teringat lagu To where you are, Josh Groban
Who can say for certain
Maybe you’re still here
I feel you all around me
Your memories so clear

Deep in the stillness
I can hear you speak
You’re still an inspiration
Can it be
That you are mine
Forever love
And you are watching over me from up above

Fly me up to where you are
Beyond the distant star
I wish upon tonight
To see you smile
If only for awhile to know you’re there
A breath away’s not far
To where you are

Are you gently sleeping
Here inside my dream
And isn’t faith believing
All power can’t be seen

As my heart holds you
Just one beat away
I cherish all you gave me everyday
’cause you are mine
Forever love
Watching me from up above

And I believe
That angels breathe
And that love will live on and never leave

You know, I read The Notebook and didn't like it, but I thought I'd give Nicholas Sparks another try. I always hear people raving about his books. So, I am planning on watching Nights in Rodanthe with my mom, and I wanted to read the book first. Let me tell you: it is terrible. Sparks' writing is so damn cheesy. I guess I shouldn't say the book wasn't entertaining because it had me laughing out loud several times. I even read certain passages to my girlfriends so we could get a good laugh. Plus, I think this guy tries to appeal to a Christian audience, but he has these characters having sex all week after they have only known each for about 36 hours. He justifies it, however, by claiming that they are "making love" because they have fallen into such a perfect love. Sparks also describes in great detail some of the most unnecessary things. There is one part where he describes a breakfast Paul cooks for Adrienne. It is like, "...the bacon was crispy but not burnt and he had added just the right amount of grated cheese to the scrambled eggs." Really, who gives a shit? Who is this guy's editor? So obviously I don't recommend this book. I don't think I will ever read another one of this guy's books again. Thank goodness this one was only 210 pages. It was near painful reading towards the end.

Ahhhh…. Nights in Rodanthe. I saw the movie many moons ago and loved it (I mean, Richard Gere and Diane Lane…two of the most handsome/beautiful humans on planet earth in my opinion. 😍 Then throw in the beach and a love story and I am sold🌊⛱️☀️❤️).

I am not much of a romance reader, but it does the heart good to have one thrown in every now and then. Apparently, my mother (whom I got my love for reading from) loves Nicholas Sparks books. She handed me four of his books a few months ago and told me to read them (trying to convince me that they all were the “bees knees”🐝). My TBR pile already gives me anxiety with how large it is, but I graciously accepted and here I am finishing the first from the pile (she literally has the receipt from Borders in the back of the book when she bought it on June 30th, 2008-I am surprised the ink is still visible on it. Hahaha. 🤣 Love you mom. ❤️)

So, we have Adrienne Willis (Diane Lane in the movie) who comes to the town of Rodanthe, North Carolina to fill in for a friend at her Inn who has a wedding to attend. Her husband left her for a younger woman and she has been left in her town of Rocky Mount raising the kids while he starts a new life. She hopes this weekend filling in will give her some much need R&R and time to think everything through. Enter Dr. Paul Flanner (Richard Gere in the movie), the only booked guest for the weekend. A weekend where a nor’easter is heading straight for them. 🌬 Paul’s life has been rocky to say the least and he is in as much need of a getaway weekend as Adrienne.

As a fellow North Carolinian, I very much enjoyed reading about all the familiar places in this book. Paul went to Duke University (I currently work as a healthcare rep for Duke University Hospital) and he worked as a doctor in Raleigh (that is where I was born and raised). There are mentions of Rocky Mount and then on his way to the beach, Highway 70 and lots of rural farm communities. My parents started taking me to Emerald Isle when I was only a year old and it is a family tradition to go every year. The sheer beauty of our coast is breathtaking and the nostalgia of all of our family trips to the beach over the years kicked in. I have also been to the Outer Banks and seen the house where the movie was filmed. 🌊⛱️🌊⛱️🌊

As I was reading, I felt like I was there experiencing all of the surroundings with them. I have walked those beaches and also found conch shells. 🐚 I have spent hours in the surf fishing, days and nights.🐠🐟🦐 I cannot number the amount of nights I have walked along the coastline and looked up in the sky to see shooting stars.🌠 It is such a special, beautiful place to me and I think Nicholas Sparks did a fantastic job portraying that beauty.

Back to the love story aspect of it, can you fall in love with a person in three days? Is that really possible? Some may question if it is feasible, and I say absolutely. The chances of it happening and there only being two people at the Inn and them liking each other and falling in love does seem far-fetched, but not impossible…and I’m here for the love story. I think we all have connections with people in life. I have friends to this day that I have had for years that I just knew when I met them were going to be a part of my life for a very long time. I love those type of connections. 💕

This book is a quick read (easily read in one sitting) with a great message driven home clearly, poetically and effectively.

While I understand that Nicholas Sparks gets glowing reviews about how touching and beautiful his sensitivity to romance is, what I actually found more remarkable about this book were the characters themselves. There were two main characters: A man and a woman. It was my experience that the man was the stronger of the two characters and the woman served as a witness to this person who quickly becomes an inspiration to the reader. I read this book wondering if his character would be consistent or surprise me. I knew that either way I wouldn't be disappointed and I wasn't in the slightest.

Another thing about Nicholas Spark's book, Nights in Rodanthe, that sticks out for me is that while primarily a romance, the book's message was not so much linked to romantic love as it was words of encouragement to be the best person you can be.

And that is all I can say without spoilery.

I cried so much harder the second time around.

20 years later, experience and motherhood and love made me see it with a whole new perspective.

It’s heart wrenching but it offers …. Joy & Hope.

I remember purchasing this author!s books from eBay when my kids were small. Not sure why I didn’t use the library.

This is another of his novels where I remember the movie only, but that’s ok as I loved both. I’d love to read hm again soon, just like I’ve rediscovered Danielle Steel after a long time between drinks. I may even loom for him on the audio format. That’s the being the book obsessed gal that I am, I do have some here on my shelves.

I love going on the hunt. And my books have been a gift from God during crazy Covid.

I even found myself browsing Netflix using this author’s name only last night.

It's not a typical young adult romance. It's about a sudden, unexpected romance between two middle-aged people. Both of their life suddenly collapsed, both are divorced and alone. They met and fall in love. Adrienne who hides her past romance until her daughter being devastated after her husband's death. As she reveals the sudden romance she had with Paul, she made her daughter understand how life still goes on without the certain someone. Their short time romance made Adrienne strong. A reminder this book will leave you in tears. It's a depressing love story. It involves the loss of loved ones.

I loved this sweet story! I loved Adrienne and Paul’s tale of how they fell in love. And I loved the way Adrienne shared her love story with her daughter. And how Paul reconnected finally with his son. The ending tore me to shreds, but I loved this short novel!

Adrienne Willis’ daughter has suffered the death of her husband, leaving her with two small sons to raise alone. Adrienne is concerned that her daughter’s grief is consuming her, leaving her sons adrift without their mother’s attention. Adrienne decides to share with her grieving daughter an experience that happened years before.

In a flashback to fifteen years earlier, Adrienne is raising her three children alone since her husband left her for a younger woman.

Dr. Paul Flanner was a highly sought-after physician who poured all his energy into his practice. After their son leaves for college, his wife leaves him. Dr. Flanner sells his practice and plans to attempt to reconcile with his son who is now practicing medicine in Ecuador.

While her children are visiting their father, Adrienne is taking care of a friend’s bed and breakfast for a few days in the small coastal town of Rodanthe, North Carolina. Only one guest is expected for the weekend, a Dr. Paul Flanner. Also expected is a fierce nor’easter. As residents prepare for the worst storm in years, another type of storm is brewing at the bed and breakfast.

When love goes bad or is neglected, it so often involves many more lives than the two directly involved. When new love is again found, it is a gift to be treasured, but invariably involves other people as well.

The novel seamlessly switches from present-day to fifteen years earlier, making for an enjoyable, exciting novel which keeps the reader guessing at each juncture.

A gifted novelist, Nicholas Sparks writes with deeply moving tenderness. He manages to keep suspense dangling while writing with detailed clarity. Nights in Rodanthe is a bitter-sweet story of the healing power of love.

This book sucked. Sorry all you Sparks fans! Don't mean to offend, but I can't believe a retired high school English teacher recommended it to me. Maybe they thought I wanted something "light". It was very True Romance in my view and his characters were sappy and overly sentimental and sweet. Nicholas Sparks has a great following, maybe I'm just too old to like romance books anymore! After I finished it, not sure why I did, I felt guilty that I could have been cleaning my bathroom with the time I spent on the book.

This is one of the few books I haven’t read by Nicholas Sparks, but it is one of my favorite movie adaptations. I really do love the movie, but as usual the book is far superior.

I listened to this on audio and the narrator did a good job.

The love, the loss, the sacrifices made are just a rollercoaster ride. Even more now as a parent myself I can truly come to appreciate what Adrienne did for her daughter Amanda, and what Paul did for his son Mark.

Truly a beautiful, yet sad story. This story just goes to prove life isn’t always easy, and it sure isn’t always beautiful. Within all the chaos that life throws you can learn to truly appreciate small or short moments for a lifetime.
