Nick McDevitt recently completed his fourth year as head coach of his alma mater. He was named as the program’s sixth head coach on April 28, 2013.

The 2017 Big South Conference Coach of the Year and the NABC District 3 Coach of the Year, McDevitt led the Bulldogs to their sixth Big South Conference regular-season title in the 2016-17 season (1996-97, 1997-98, 2001-02, 2007-08, 2011-12 and 2016-17). He has now been a part of five of the six Big South Conference regular-season crowns either as a player, assistant coach or head coach (1997-98, 2001-02, 2007-08, 2011-12 and 2016-17).

Just the third coach in Big South Conference history to win 15 or more games in each of his first four seasons as a head coach in the conference, McDevitt guided the Bulldogs to their second-most wins in program history in a season this past year with 23. This past year's Bulldog team reached 20 wins faster than any other team in program history in 27 games. 

McDevitt's program has now collected back-to-back 20-win seasons and made two straight postseason appearances with the Bulldogs playing in the 2016 NCAA Tournament and the 2017 CollegeInsider.com Tournament.

The appearance in this year’s CIT marked UNC Asheville’s sixth appearance in a postseason tournament with McDevitt a part of the program. The Bulldogs have advanced to the NCAA Tournament four times before (2003, 2011, 2012 and 2016) and the NIT (2008) once.

McDevitt was also chosen as a finalist for the 2017 Skip Prosser Man of the Year Award. Named after the late Skip Prosser, who died suddenly in 2007 while the head coach at Wake Forest, the award is presented annually to those who not only achieve success on the basketball court but who also display moral integrity off of it as well. 

McDevitt overall has coached 20 different Bulldog players who have earned All-Big South Conference honors. 

McDevitt led the Bulldogs to the 2016 Big South Conference Tournament championship and a spot in the 2016 NCAA Tournament. Asheville finished the 2015-16 season 22-12 overall and 12-6 in Big South play in the 2015-16 season. Asheville swept the season series against Big South Conference opponents Campbell, Presbyterian, Longwood, Liberty and Charleston Southern. 

McDevitt and Asheville finished 15-16 overall and 10-8 in Big South play in 2014-15. Asheville swept the season series against Big South opponents Campbell, Gardner-Webb and Liberty and added a win over eventual league champion Coastal Carolina at home in late January.

The summer of 2015 saw a pair of former Bulldogs earn professional contracts with Jaleel Roberts (Class of 2015) becoming the first player in Asheville history to earn an invitation to NBA training camp after signing with the Washington Wizards. Jaron lane (Class of 2014) also began his professional career when he signed with the London Lions of the British Basketball League.

McDevitt’s first club bounced back from a 1-7 start to post a 17-15 overall record. The Bulldogs finished second in the South Division of the league with a 10-6 mark. Asheville knocked off Radford in the quarterfinals of the Big South Tournament before losing, 80-79, to Winthrop in the semifinals when two last-second shots wouldn’t fall. The Blue and White picked up an impressive non-conference win at College of Charleston for McDevitt first victory as head coach. Asheville picked up a win over eventual league champion Coastal Carolina at home late in the season.

McDevitt succeeded long-time Bulldog head coach Eddie Biedenbach. The Madison county native both played and coached under Biedenbach.

After graduating from UNC Asheville in 2001, Biedenbach immediately appointed McDevitt to his coaching staff. He served as an assistant coach for 10 seasons before being elevated to Associate Head Coach in 2011.

McDevitt was a four-year letterman for the Bulldogs from 1997 through 2001. He graduated in May 2001 with a degree in history. His playing time increased steadily during his career as he became a key player for UNC Asheville off the bench in the 2000-01 season. He was fifth on the team in three-pointers made with 11 and led the team by shooting 52 percent from long distance.

In addition, McDevitt enjoyed considerable success off the court. He was named to the Big South Conference All-Academic team his junior and senior years and was a member of the Dean’s List four different times at UNC Asheville. He was also a member of the Big South Presidential Honor Roll three times and served on the NABC (National Association of Basketball Coaches) Student Basketball Council his junior and senior years.

McDevitt enjoyed a standout career at Madison High School in Marshall. He was the starting point guard for the Patriots for three seasons and led the 2-A school to three straight conference championships and two regional appearances. McDevitt averaged 17 points and 10 assists his senior year and earned all-region honors by the Asheville Citizen-Times. In addition, he is Madison’s all-time leader in assists and steals.

McDevitt coached the Tennessee Travelers 17-Under team in 2001 and assisted Bob Gibbons’ Tournament of Champions in 1999 and 2001.

In the summer of 2013, he was named to Asheville’s inaugural “Forty Under 40” class by the Asheville Chamber of Commerce. McDevitt was recognized for making a mark in the Asheville area in professional achievements and commitment to excellence.

McDevitt is married to the former Lauren Cooper, and the couple has one child, Cooper.
