Extra! Extra! Alan Menken knows how to write songs for the screen and musical stage. He has created a series of singable and hummable tunes that make up the core of Newsies. Starting with the Disney film that became a cult classic in the '90's, and adding a new book by Harvey Fierstein, he has written new songs that brought the Newsies that appears now on Broadway to a new level and makes it a more satisfying story than that offered in the original film version. With Jeremy Jordan in the role of head Newsie Jack Kelly, backed up by a talented ensemble of singing and dancing Newsies and support characters, this original Broadway album is something I keep listening to over and over. I can't get the songs out of my head. The two versions of "Santa Fe" are gut-wrenchingly beautiful. "Sieze the Day," "King of New York," "Carrying the Banner," and "Something to Believe In" are all beautifully realized. Until you can get to Broadway to see this show live, the cast album is a good way to catch Newsies fever, or to refresh the images and sounds in your head if you have been lucky enough to see the show live.

I had never even heard of Newsies until I decided to audition for it on a whim since I wanted to get back into doing theatre. I almost backed out of the audition and I'm SO GLAD I didn't!
Once I bought the Broadway soundtrack and started listening to it in the car I fell in love with this and now it's my favorite musical of all time. It is completely worth it to own a physical copy of the CD, not just digital. It's a great play and the music itself is perfect for when I need an upbeat soundtrack to get myself more energized.
I wish I could have had the honor of seeing it on Broadway, but I had never even heard of it until well after it was long gone. I'm very grateful this recording of the original cast exists.

I first got hooked on Newsies when my middle school social studies teacher showed it to us. It is now one of my favorite movies so I couldn't wait to see the play on Broadway. I saw the play and it was unbelievable. I got home and instantly ordered this cd which is all i have been listening to for the past 2 weeks. There is a few songs that were specially written and not in the movie. Also most of the songs from the movie have been tweaked a bit but they are still recognizable. The last thing I would say is to realize that this is the ORIGINAL Broadway cast recording. The play has been out for almost 2 years now and about half of the cast has changed since the recording including the 2 main characters. That being said it is very difficult to tell the difference unless you really paid attention. Highly recommend this recording!

Totally love the songs

I am a longtime Newsies superfan and can't tell you how many times I have wondered why this musical never went on Broadway. Well...I just spent the last 2 days listening to the Broadway soundtrack over and over in my car on my way to and from work and loving *almost* every second of it. They have really improved and added to the original songs without changing the sound and the spirit. I was a bit taken aback by the spareness of the orchestral arrangements, but after 2 listens I started to like it. "Santa Fe" is wonderful, as are "The World Will Know" and "Once and For All". The lyric changes were a little unsettling and at times seemed arbitrary (one of my favorites "Summer stinks and winter's waitin'/welcome to New York/boy ain't nature fascinatin'/when you's gotta walk"--I just don't see how the new lyrics are better) but it will also just take some getting used to. The new songs are--not bad---another reviewer used the phrase "warmed-over Menkenness" which I think is a fairly apt description. "Watch what happens" made my head spin at first, but I think once I get it down it's going to be fun to sing. I didn't think "Seize the Day" could get better, but they really expanded it and turned it into something awe-inspiring. And I am so thrilled that Brooklyn got a song (I remember having "Never fear, Brooklyn is here" scrawled across my binder in high school) that I can't even tell you if it's good or not. As for "King of New York", all the tapping and slapping that you hear is such a crazy tease. If Disney would put that clip on the radio commercials they would have people lined up halfway to Queens.
As for the performers--I loved Christian Bale, but he wasn't much of a singer. Jeremy Jordan has a great, strong voice and seems to put his heart into his performance. The girl (don't know names, sorry) is a teeny bit shrill at times but gets stronger on the chorus of "Watch What Happens". And I forgave Crutchy for not being Marty Belafsky when he said "I got poisonality!"
Now there's only one thing left to do. See ya at Times Square!
Nov. 26--My apologies to Christian Bale. I just listened to my movie soundtrack and I don't know what got into me to write that he wasn't good. He WAS. No Broadway belter, but good. And also, his accent was a whole lot more consistent than Jeremy Jordan's. Overall, he sounded more authentic. Which is ironic because I think he's English.

Nothing but good things to say about this product (which is an excellent memento of the Broadway show)!! The solo singing is outstanding across the board, with Jeremy Jordan in top form. The songs by Alan Menken grow on you with each listen. The conducting is vigorous, but still sensitive to the tone of each song, just like for the stage. The chorus work is nothing short of fantastic. And, as is typical with Disney, the sound recording quality is superb; no distortion, a true reflection of voice and instruments. This is, alongside "Catch Me If You Can," the best recorded cast album of the last year or so. Even if you hated the movie (and who didn't), this musical recording is a great addition to any collection of musicals. It may not be "high art," but so what; it's fun, and beautifully performed.

¡El Mejor Musical de Broadway!
Reviewed in Mexico on June 23, 2020

I have been a fan of the film musical and soundtrack, and am now a fan of the stage soundtrack as well. There have been song and lyric updates from the original, but formate most part I feel they are an improvement. Vocals and harmonies and lyrics are top notch as I would expect from these composers, and I've spent many an hour singing along on a long car trip.
