      Critics Consensus

Bob Newhart's return to television is shorn down to the point of almost entirely relying on the comedian's dry wit -- which he reliably delivers with hesitant aplomb.

Judy Flander Chicago Tribune Bob Newhart's latest sitcom has been reaping high ratings despite a dated approach to humor. It has to be to Newhart's credit; he's dependable, and so is the material. Jun 21, 2021 Full Review Kerry Brown Sydney Morning Herald The man who's made a career out of understatements has been sabotaged. His renditions of a mediocre man, comic by virtue of his implacable reasonableness in the face of an unreasonable world, is undone by the failed lunacy of his supporting cast. Jun 21, 2021 Full Review John J. O'Connor New York Times It's thin, granted, but it probably doesn't matter. Mr. Newhart is at the top of his form, and that means comedy at its best. Jun 21, 2021 Full Review Bill Morrison News & Observer (Raleigh, NC) Newhart is not a great show, but a charming diversion. If it exists only for Newhart and Poston, that's reason enough for its existence. Jun 21, 2021 Full Review Karl Vick Tampa Bay Times Bob has forsaken his successful career in psychology and left Chicago (and, regrettably, Suzanne Pleshette) to indulge a longtime interest in American history. It should prove most rewarding. Rated: 3/4 Jun 21, 2021 Full Review Bruce R. Miller Sioux City Journal Starring as a sometimes writer of "How To" books and proprietor of a New England inn, the stand-up comedians' comedian works his subtle magic weekly, playing beautifully off the likes of Tom Poston and Steve Kampmann.
